Lukas Lerager gave Copenhagen the lead early in the second half (56’). First, the good news. That result has extended Bayern Munich’s unbeaten run in the Champions League group stage to 36 games.

The German record champions have also won the last 16 games in a row and are now the first team in Champions League history to go unbeaten in 18 group stage away games in a row. On top of that, Thomas Müller has now equaled former Real Madrid goalkeeper Iker Casillas with 101 Champions League wins. Only former Man United, Real Madrid, and Juventus star Cristiano Ronaldo (115) have more, and with the Portuguese star now playing in Saudi Arabia it is only a question of time until Müller will also secure that record.

There is more positive news. Bayern Munich’s biggest rivals in the group, Manchester United, lost their game against Galatasaray at home at Old Trafford 3-2. That puts Bayern in the incredible position of making a big step to the next round with a win over Galatasaray on matchday 3.

Now, to the not-so-good news. Although Bayern Munich beat Copenhagen, the result will undoubtedly raise further question marks surrounding head coach Thomas Tuchel’s side. Bayern labored through the first 45 minutes, and a better team would have perhaps punished that spell—much like Leverkusen and Leipzig have done earlier this season.

We controlled the game and gave nothing away, so it was tough to concede from their first half-chance of the second half.

It made everything harder, but that’s why turning the game around has to be considered a good performance. ” A brilliant individual effort by Thomas Müller set up the winner by Mathys Tel. (Photo by Sven .

As did some key substitutions. Shortly after Musiala equalized with a brilliant effort, Tuchel brought on Mathys Tel for Leroy Sané and Thomas Müller for Konrad Laimer. Those two substitutions would win the game for Bayern because just six minutes after coming on, Müller would run onto a Harry Kane header, rush into the box, and then, under enormous pressure, find the open Tel, who scored with a brilliant finish.

“It was clear that he was very eager to come in,” Tuchel said when asked about Müller. “He played a huge role in the win with Leon [Goretzka] and Mathys. They brought a lot of energy, and our game became more dangerous after they were subbed on.

” The Müller goal was undoubtedly brilliant, and Tuchel can certainly credit himself with getting his substations spot on for the second time in a row, as they also made a big difference against Leipzig. But while Tuchel’s changes were excellent, it is also telling that both goals were the products of individual brilliance. Whether it was Musiala’s dribble and fantastic finish for the equalizer or Müller’s power dribble and set up for the winner, both goals were not necessarily the result of a tactical system.

“We can’t achieve our goals this season with 11 players; we need the energy from the bench,” Tuchel said after the game. Tuchel, in fact, has often pointed out depth as one of his squad’s most significant issues. Some of that might be of the club’s own doing, as Bayern failed to secure a defender and no.

6 on deadline day and needlessly sold defenders Josip Stanisic and Benjamin Pavard. Sporting director Christoph Freund, perhaps together with Max Eberl , will address those issues in the upcoming transfer windows. But Tuchel’s job will be to give this Bayern side an identity on the pitch.

Because individual brilliance aside, there is no clear handwriting when it comes to this club, and a better team than Copenhagen might not allow Bayern to be rescued by individual brilliance.
