Clever S’pore dude uses his RC car to get groceries & dinner without leaving home

While many people might think of running errands as therapeutic and relaxing, others just find it a chore. After all, you’ve got to leave the house and probably drive to some place else, where you’ll have to worry about finding the right parking spot. Sure, walking is an option too.

But not everyone has the privilege of living within walking distance to a grocery store or eatery. And then of course, there are some people who simply just don’t want to leave home. That’s fair.

But then those people don’t have a feasible way to do the things they want, unless you’re Singapore TikTok user Steve Ho ( @puangster ), who makes good use of his limitless-range remote-controlled (RC) car to run his errands. Perhaps feeling a tad too tired to leave home (but still in need of dinner and snacks), Steve decided to show off his little ‘helper’ on TikTok – a white RC 4×4 (looks like it’s modeled after a Jeep Wrangler) complete with basket in tow. The rig even has multiple cameras set up so he can see his surroundings properly.

But the cherry on top? A speaker and microphone system that allows him to communicate with grocery store and restaurant employees. It’s like being there in person, but not. The first video showcasing his impressive and clever rig shows Steve taking his RC out to the convenience store to get a bottle of Coke and some ice cream: While the task might seem menial, we can see he does encounter a few hiccups along the way, the biggest of which is actually getting the attention of store employees, who seem to be busy with other things.

After all, the rig doesn’t exactly have any robotic arms. This means he has to rely on communication to get actual humans to place his desired items in his basket. After what seems like an eternity, he finally gets his Coke and ice cream.

But hey, probably still better than leaving the house and doing it yourself, right? Especially when you’ve got an RC car that can do it for you! But wait, what about food delivery services, you ask? Well, they cost money too. So really, while things may have been difficult at first, Steve still presents a pretty novel and convenient way to get shit done. In a later video, Steve demonstrates how to get dinner with his RC car, with the assistance of some helpful food court employees and passersby: And just like the trip to the convenience store, it’s not exactly smooth sailing.

But at the end of the night, he still gets to have a hearty dinner without leaving his home. Plus, the unusual contraption attracts a lot of attention – with some people seen trying to interact with it like it’s a device from the future. This makes us wonder why we hadn’t thought to do this ourselves, especially during the earlier phases of the COVID-19 pandemic, when countries imposed harsh lockdowns on everyone.
