The Extra-Terrestrial, and, apparently, the 47 th anniversary of Jaws, Universal Pictures and Amblin Entertainment has announced that two Steven Spielberg classics will soon be released into cinemas in the IMAX format for the very first time. The story of a boy who finds a lost alien in his back garden and protects him from the authorities to help him return home, E. T.

was originally released in the summer of 1982 and quickly became of the most beloved movies of all time. At one time, in 1983, it overtook Star Wars to become the highest-grossing movie. The movie that took this accolade immediately before Star Wars was, of course, Jaws, where a great white shark terrorizes holidaymakers on “Amity Island”, and in 1975, it chomped its way through ticket sales to take the number one all-time movie in terms of ticket sales.

E. T. the Extra Terrestrial is heading to IMAX Universal Pictures For any film fan the opportunity to see these classics on the big screen is always a treat, but to see them on a giant IMAX screen, with its accompanying huge sound system makes them nearly unmissable.

Universal has said that E. T. will be released in IMAX on August 12 and Jaws on September 2 nd .

However, here in the UK, nothing has been confirmed by either Cineworld or Vue or indeed the BFI, operating the IMAX at Waterloo. That said, the Jaws fan website, the Daily Jaws, believes that Jaws will hit IMAX screens in the UK on September 9 th , while on Twitter Cineworld has told people to keep an eye on social media , so it’s looking hopeful. On top of the IMAX news, Jaws fans can also get excited by the fact that the film will also be released in the RealD 3D format.

It’s not the first time that the Jaws franchise has appeared in the stereoscopic format, with 1983s Jaws 3-D also requiring the donning of specs. However, Jaws 3D is famously terrible , whereas the original is one of the best films ever made, so that’s a major difference right there. Whether that’s enough to make audiences want to see Jaws in 3D is another matter.

I’m personally a fan of 3D, but only really in an IMAX Laser theater, where the scale and the extra brightness of the laser projector does justice to the format. I only hope the standard projectors used for Jaws 3D will have fresh bulbs so audiences can get the full impact of the drama. We’re going to need to see Jaws on a bigger screen.

You might want to hang on though, for the full IMAX experience. As for other territories aside from the U. S and the U.
