The Mirror reports anyone who bumps up on the curb and parks in Edinburgh could face a £100 fine, with double parking and parking on dropped kerbs are also to be banned under the new plans. The City of Edinburgh Council have drawn up these plans , with an exception for delivery drivers when the regulations come into force on December 11.

London is the only other city in the UK where pavement parking is illegal, but other cities across the country can take action if a driver is causing an obstruction. In 2021, the Scottish government followed suit when passing a law to allow local authorities to prevent pavement parking, and now, ministerial approval is set to go through in December to enforce the ban in Edinburgh. A big majority of residents – 68 per cent – have supported this parking ban, with pavement parking from cars and vans particularly causing trouble for disabled people and parents with pushchairs. Niall Foley, lead external affairs manager at Guide Dogs Scotland, said: “Parking on pavements is a nuisance for everyone, but potentially dangerous if you are a wheelchair user forced onto the road, pushing a buggy, or have sight loss and can’t see traffic coming towards you. ” Parking on pavements is a nuisance for everyone (Image: Getty) Director of Living Streets Scotland, Stuart Hay, added Edinburgh has taken the “right approach to the enforcement of pavement parking, recognising that footways are for people, not parking spaces for cars”, as reported by the BBC .

No additional staff have been recruited to help enforce the ban, with the council claiming that it wouldn’t be necessary – as there are enough legal parking spaces across Edinburgh. It is now expected that other Scottish councils might follow Edinburgh’s lead.

Car ownership is higher than the amount of parking available in certain residential areas, councillors said.
