At a certain point, the kind of collaborations Fortnite is doing have started to seem routine, like whatever new blockbuster movie or show was out would obviously have its attached Fortnite skin. But the Dragon Ball Z crossover? That’s different.

That feels like a level of absurdity previously unable to be reached, and now that it’s here, and Goku, Vegeta, Bulma and Beerus have joined the game, players cannot stop posting the absurdity of how wild it is that Dragon Ball Z characters have finally landed in this giant pool of existing pop culture IPs. Fans have posted clip after clip of some of these scenarios, which have racked up hundreds of thousands of likes and shares. It’s the collaboration that launched a thousand memes, and feels like one of the only potential collabs left that could produce this kind of fan excitement. Fortnite has already dumped in hundreds of characters from Star Wars, Marvel and DC, it has celebrities like Ariana Grande and LeBron James. It has a greatest hits video game section with Master Chief, Kratos, Marcus Fenix, Lara Croft and more.

But now it has Goku and Dragon Ball Z, and I just don’t know what or how that can be topped. The question for me is not what collab Fortnite does next, but where it goes from where now that it has this absolutely unrivaled collection of characters. Right now, you use your Fortnite skins to do essentially three things: play Fortnite (creating goofy situations at baseline like Goku and Spider-Man unloading AKs at each other), play creative maps, or attend live events like virtual concerts.

Even if this is all metaverse-adjacent, it feels like there’s still work two be done here to expand Fortnite past its current ambitions, it to me, it feels a bit like its forever war against Apple stalled that to some extent. And of course, so did the pandemic. We’ll see where we go next however, and another batch or two of DBZ character are a given.
