Google trashes biggest-ever AI patent lawsuit slapped by Singular, here’s what company said

Google faces a federal jury in a $7 billion patent infringement case over its AI technology. Singular Computing alleges that Google copied innovations from Joseph Bates. The trial’s outcome could impact AI development and patent protection.

Google is facing a federal jury in a landmark patent infringement case involving its artificial intelligence (AI) technology. The lawsuit, filed by Singular Computing , alleges that Google copied key processor innovations from computer scientist Joseph Bates to power AI features in popular products like Search, Gmail, and Translate. At stake is a staggering $7 billion, potentially more than double the largest patent infringement award ever issued in the US.

Singular claims Google’s Tensor Processing Units (TPUs), which boost AI performance, infringe on two patents related to Bates’ “revolutionary” architecture. For those unaware Google’s Tensor processors power its past three generation of Pixel range of smaertphones. Google launched first Pixel phones powered by Tensor in 2021.

What Google said on the lawsuit Google, however, vehemently denies the accusations, calling the patents “dubious” and asserting its processors were developed independently. “We look forward to setting the record straight,” said Google spokesperson Jose Castaneda. The trial, expected to last two to three weeks, hinges on whether Google’s TPUs, introduced in 2016, infringe on Bates’ patented technology, specifically versions 2 and 3 released in 2017 and 2018.

Singular claims these versions utilize Bates’ improved architecture, enabling greater processing power and transforming AI training and inference. Google counters that its processors operate differently and that the patents are invalid. According to court filings, Google engineers even rejected Bates’ ideas for not aligning with their AI development goals.

This high-profile case could have significant implications for the future of AI development and patent protection. The outcome will be closely watched by the tech industry and could set a precedent for future patent disputes involving cutting-edge technologies.
