HFCL bags Rs 1,127-crore optical transport network upgradation deal from BSNL

NEW DELHI: Homegrown telecom gear maker HFCL has won a Rs 1,127 crore deal from state-owned Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited ( BSNL ) to upgrade the telco’s optical transport network (OTN) across the country. “HFCL’s comprehensive network upgrade will not only cater to the heightened requirements of Enterprise and FTTH/broadband services but will also position BSNL for the future with the seamless launch of 4G services and the anticipation of 5G services in the coming years,” HFCL said in a statement Monday. HFCL has partnered with Finnish kit vendor Nokia to deploy the optical technology.

ETTelecom on November 12 reported first that BSNL was set to award a Rs 1,000-crore purchase order to Nokia for OTN equipment supply and deployment through a local system integrator, a development which had irked domestic gear makers. Advt The Centre for Development of Telematics (C-DoT), part of a Tata Consultancy Services (TCS)-led consortium, is currently supplying core equipment for BSNL’s 4G network deployment following a proof-of-concept (PoC). HFCL’s deal with BSNL includes enhancement of the latter’s network through OTN upgrades at over 300 large network nodes and 2000 amplifier sites.

The installation is expected to conclude within 18 months. The deal includes the entire spectrum of activities, including supply, installation, commissioning and maintenance of OTN. BSNL, fortified by this optical network upgrade, will boast an impressive data capacity of 12 terabytes, effectively meeting its data needs for the next decade.

The backbone network, spanning 310 aggregation locations, will be foundational for 4G, 5G, and BharatNet services. “The order aimed at revolutionizing BSNL’s Optical Transport Network is a testament to our unwavering commitment to advancing the nation’s technological prowess,” said Mahendra Nahata, the Managing Director at HFCL. “Collaborating with our partner for the project, NOKIA Network , we are actively reshaping the future and making significant contributions to India’s digital evolution,” he added.
