getty How can I benefit from business books when I don’t have time to read? originally appeared on Quora : the place to gain and share knowledge, empowering people to learn from others and better understand the world. Answer by Andrew Cohen, CEO at Brainscape, on Quora : As a bit of a nerd who has devoted my life to creating hyper-efficient processes for everything I can get my hands on, especially learning, I’ve come up with FOUR rules that’ll allow you to unlock the best business advice, even if you have less than 10 minutes for reading. These rules will allow you to feed your brain precisely the right information you need to OPTIMIZE YOURSELF and eliminate any barriers standing in your way, which’ll guide you towards huge success in whatever it is you’re doing for business (and in life).

RULE # 1 : Find books that are RELEVANT to your situation and challenges. Every entrepreneur, business owner, and idiot with a business blog will have dozens of book recommendations they swear by. But just because those people are successful doesn’t mean their recommendations are right FOR YOU or your situation, timing, company, and specific challenges.

Rather, find books that school you on the specific challenges you’re facing right now or in the short to medium term. Instead of mindlessly plowing through your “to-read” list, cherry pick the ones that focus on management, leadership, and social dynamics. RULE # 2 : Read only what you need Since you’re perpetually starved of time, why not take a different approach to consuming business books by cherry-picking the chapters that are most relevant to you? Alternatively, you could use a book summary service like Get Abstract or Blinkist , which ruins the punchlines (in the best possible way).

If you can get the same value in 10 minutes’ worth of reading versus an hour, why not? Alternatively, search Google for the best and most relevant articles, blogs, or podcasts that could address your knowledge gaps, rather than committing to a whole book. This route is worth keeping in mind at least some of the time. RULE 3 : Keep a book list Book recommendations pile up; and what you might NOT find valuable today could prove indispensable tomorrow.

So, my third rule is to create a books-to-read list and be diligent about maintaining it. This means adding new recommendations as they arise and shuffling the titles around based on priority and relevance to you right now. Having this library at your fingertips will give you a great reference to turn to when you’re hunting for advice or wondering what to read next.

RULE # 4 : Use your reading time efficiently (and actionably) Write down any thoughts, ideas, solutions, or inspirations as they come to you. Importantly, once you get to the end of that book, create actionable steps out of your notes, such as a to-do list with reminders, an email to team members, or entries on your project management app’s board. Also: discuss these new ideas with your team! Engaging with the lessons learned will (1) prevent you from forgetting them and (2) allow you to spread your knowledge to your team.

Just remember that no matter how time starved you are, energy in = energy out. So if you’re not taking steady sips of knowledge and inspiration from other people—which is packaged really well in books—you’re not necessarily keeping your understanding of business, people, and the world up-to-date. Hopefully these four rules will help you with that!
