Share to Facebook Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin ‘Hubris’ arrives on desktop VR in time for the holidays. Cyborn Belgian 3D animation and VR studio Cyborn has finally revealed the launch date for one of the most exciting virtual reality action-adventure experiences out there–one that doesn’t just talk the talk about “pushing the genre forward,” but a game that has already proved it absolutely walks the walk. Hubris , a sci-fi tale that debuted with a superb demo at Gamescom 2022, will launch on a range of desktop VR platforms on December 7, retailing at $39.

99 (€39. 99/£39. 99).

What’s more, it has been scheduled for release on Meta Quest 2, PlayStation VR2, and a handful of other unannounced platforms at some point in 2023. Cyborn’s debut transforms you into a rookie agent of the militaristic and secretive Order of Objectivity, who undergoes training before being tasked with finding a teammate on the Twin planet system, which is in the process of being terraformed. This beautiful but dangerous alien environment has been carefully designed to push human movement to the next level–and having played it in Cologne this August, I can confidently say it’s the most ambitiously physical VR game I’ve ever played.

Hubris has leaned heavily into research to take a holistic approach to natural body motions, with Cyborn specifically designing the game from the ground up to make its environments as engaging as possible. Unlike the incredible Half-Life: Alyx , which used the tried-and-tested blink teleport mechanic for movement, Hubris allows you to travel based on arm movement–something that has been further tweaked to allow you to climb, swim, and jump, all without the textbook motion sickness that many other games have delivered in their attempts to do the same. Hubris ’ combat also feels incredibly natural, to the point that you feel entirely to blame for missing your target.

While the demo only showcased training dummies and low-level, blob-like alien lifeforms, the wider game promises a diverse mix of wildlife, as well as humanoids and mechanised enemies, and each one requires different tactics to defeat them. ‘Hubris’ can be gorgeous, but it also has its fair share of grim creatures. Cyborn However, Hubris ’ real strength lies in the beauty of its environments.

Whether you’re in the tight corridors of a spaceship or at the top of a cliff on a serene planet, you can find yourself getting distracted by just staring at your surroundings. “We were blown away by the response we saw at Gamescom and it’s really exciting to finally be able to lift the lid on the launch of Hubris in just over a month,” said Ives Agemans, CEO and game director at Cyborn. “We know how important is to make the most of the opportunities VR provides, and we think Hubris is going to serve as the next step for the genre, delivering an immersive experience that will push VR platforms forward.

” With just six weeks to go, Cyborn may quietly usher in a new standard for VR gaming–and given the tentative, early 2023 release date for PSVR2, there’s every chance we could see Hubris being a very welcome and popular day-one game for Sony’s next batch of day-one adopters.
