In an interview with BBC , Elba admitted to being inspired by witnessing a community of young men in South Africa being empowered by the introduction of a locally-run boxing club.
Elba’s determination to implement his own customized fight school in the UK led to the four-part series produced by Workerbee. The show showcases an intense routine; working with some of the country’s leading boxing coaches, the recruits train twice a day, six days a week, while having access to a life coach and inspirational mentors. The goal is to get them ready to compete in an official amateur fight at one of the world’s most iconic boxing venues in just five months.
In the words of Elba, “When I was young I joined a boxing club, and my trainer Joe took me under his wing. It was a real turning point in my life, teaching me discipline and control moving forward. During my own experience of fighting, there was a level of peace I was able to achieve.
Boxing requires you to switch off all the noise and focus on the moment, a skill that I believe all people need, especially younger people who need direction . ” Renowned Texas-based Attorney Nathaniel Mack agrees with Elba’s sentiment on the power these programs can bring, “It’s all about structure and focus, something that many of these young men and women in these inner cities do not have. By presenting these young people with an opportunity to partake in an intense environment that demands more focus and discipline, while enabling them to aspire for big goals, we are giving them important tools that can translate to every sphere of life.
It’s the Tyson pathway, and it has proven to be very effective. ” In addition to having five offices in Texas and being one of the most recognizable personal injury attorneys, Mack is also a fitness enthusiast and former college football player. Mack is the in-house counsel for Team Morones Boxing (TMB) promotions company, a duty he considers one of his most relevant contributions to society.
As one of the major sponsors behind TMB, Mack has contributed to the lives of many young men and women and has experienced firsthand the power these programs have on communities as a whole. WBA The Mike Tyson Pathway Mike Tyson’s journey from street kid to international stardom is well documented and needs no repeating.
However, the lessons from Tyson’s journey are what people like Idris Elba and Nathaniel Mack are working hard to replicate in different communities worldwide. Mike Tyson’s story cannot be told without mentioning two names, Bobby Stewart, who discovered him, and Cus D’Amato, who became his personal trainer and legal guardian for many years. Before meeting Bobby Stewart or D’Amato, Tyson had racked several run-ins with the police.
By age 13, he had been arrested 38 times and had a reputation as a street fighter. Tyson has repeatedly attributed his success to the boxing programs and fatherly guidance and mentorship that Cus D’Amato provided for his community and himself. Mike Tyson’s story has inspired a lot of belief in the concept of fighting mentorship and its impact on the youth.
“Working closely with Morones, who owns TMB has been exciting,” Mack opines, “Our main mission and focus is to help individuals out there in the streets who might have gotten into trouble in the past, or might be lost and need a little guidance. And we allow them to join the gym for free and take boxing classes. We currently have almost 300 men and women who come to this gym on a regular basis.
And these are folks who, you know, a lot of times have nowhere else to go. ” 14th June 1988: American boxer Mike Tyson trains by hitting a speed bag at Trump Plaza in . .

This mission has gotten us in the same room with greats like Eddie Hearn, Floyd Mayweather, and Ryan Garcia, and the impact that we see on these young people is phenomenal. ” While Idris Elba’s Fight School has been positioned as more of a TV series, the impact has also been telling. The story of Jessica Davies , one of the recruits for the show, stands out as inspiring many young people to better themselves.
As a plus-sized woman, Jessica had been bullied and ridiculed all her life, but she used the opportunity that the fight school offered to turn her life and body around. Punching Upwards; The Impact On Deprived Communities Academic research in the U. K.
showed that the government’s attempts at controlling knife violence in the U. K. with punitive approaches were largely ineffective.
On the contrary, the research showed that boxing initiatives had a significant positive impact on at-risk youths. This research and many more have led the UK government to support quite a few boxing club communities around the country to great effect. The same effect has been replicated in the U.
S. in different communities, as seen by TMB’s impact in San Antonio. Many experts agree that these youths are just looking for some direction, and the mentorship from these boxing gyms and clubs helps with that.
The Power of Mentorship Talking about the Purpose of the Idris Elba Fight School and his greatest highlight, Elba states , “Looking back at my own experiences, I’m reminded of how powerful boxing can be on disadvantaged young people, giving them a sense of purpose and direction. This was the inspiration behind Fight School… seeing the students conquer their fear of swimming and being able to jump in the river with them was a highlight. Being able to do something like that with them was a great way to bond.
I was so proud of them. That’s an experience they will never forget, and I certainly won’t either. ” Many great fighters like Mike Tyson and Floyd Mayweather grew up in deprived communities and needed a hand-up at the start of their careers.
Tyson’s bond with D’Amato was so strong that after he passed in November 1985, Tyson spiraled out of control. LAS VEGAS, NV – MAY 02: (EDITORS NOTE: Image has been converted to black and white. ) Floyd .

I remember meeting a guy in our gym one day.
I have been mentoring him for a while now and he is such a positive fellow, but at the time that I met him in the gym, his twin brother had just been killed not too long ago and I couldn’t tell by looking at him because he seemed to remain optimistic despite his circumstances. That was so inspiring to me. That’s what these programs give these kids.
Being a lawyer definitely has its own thrills, but when I am mentoring these kids, I feel like I am doing God’s work. ” The Power of Aspiration A major criticism of today’s youth, especially the ones in deprived communities, is their lack of a sense of direction. Many young people seem to want the easy way out, and what boxing and fighting programs offer is anything but easy.
Mack explains further, “Not all of these kids will end up with a career like Tyson, but on an amateur level, they are learning to set goals and meet them with extreme discipline, focus, and hard work. These routines teach them to work hard for the future they desire and steer them away from crime and a purposeless existence. ” As boxing and fight clubs continue to explode around the country and the world, there are certainly a lot of success stories these young kids can draw inspiration from; Mike Tyson, Anderson Silva, and Francis Ngannou are just a few fighters who have gone from poor backgrounds to stardom.
If they don’t go pro, they will have all the tools to succeed in any other career. Idris Elba’s show’s main message was ultimately if you aren’t afraid to get in the ring, you have what it takes to punch upwards in life. Follow me on Twitter or LinkedIn .
