Letters for Oct. 9: President Joe Biden is the real ‘train wreck’

Re “ ” (Your Views, Sept. 23): Attacking former President Donald Trump, who has been out of office for two and a half years, is a nice try to deflect from the real train wreck we are living under: President Joe Biden. Chilling our oil industry and greenlighting the Nord Stream 2 pipeline for Russia was a clear problem.

The Afghanistan debacle signaled our weakness to Russian President Vladimir Putin, China, Iran and North Korea. The situation on our southern border is purely of Biden’s making, and even his allies in the Democratic states and cities are complaining about the negative effects. Excessive government spending continues to fuel inflation.

The president himself is not showing any signs of an energetic leader on top of his game. So welcome to the Biden train wreck: rampant inflation; crude oil approaching $100 per barrel; rampant crime in many parts of the country; millions of Afghans delivered to darkness under the Taliban; large parts of Ukraine destroyed with no end in sight; millions of people flooding illegally into our country from every corner of the earth; an emboldened China, Iran and North Korea, all with no good intentions for us; a president who won’t hold a real news conference; and hoodies and gym shorts acceptable in the U. S.

Senate. There is an expression, “I’m sick and tired of being sick and tired. ” In the case of the rampant smash-and-grab, organized pillaging of American business and the failure of the legal system to stop it, I definitely feel that way.

Police departments across the nation have at least two nonlethal methods to deal with lawbreakers. There is the taser, but when 50 to 100 people are involved in the melee, it is simply not viable. However, police departments also have shotguns that fire beanbags.

They can seriously hurt a target, and are rarely life-threatening. I suggest all police be armed with that weapon, authorized and encouraged to shoot looters on sight. When the perps realize there is a real risk of both physical pain and injury and a resulting capture, their thought process will change.

Short of real bullets, this has the potential of putting a crimp in the activity. No one feels sorry for Target having to close stores because of the cost. Perhaps they should start feeling sorry for all the people who need the facility (for goods and jobs) and recognize that theft is actually paid for by the very people politicians are supposed to help.

Organized thievery is not a community activity and should not be allowed to continue. I always thought that another way of saying democracy was “majority rule. ” How naïve was I.

It seems that one petulant “little senator,” when he doesn’t get his way, can turn our military on its ear. And then, even worse, a few lawmakers who couldn’t get their own way almost shut down the federal government. Regardless of the harm it will do to millions of Americas, they nearly shut it down.

I cannot begin to fathom the size of an ego it must take to do something like this. Oh wait, yes, I can. This country has been dealing with such an ego since 2016.

So Congress recently voted on a resolution to stop a government shutdown for at least another 47 days. No problem, now eight Republican Congress members have found another way to shut down the government by booting out the speaker of the House. What a dysfunctional government we have.
