Congress loses its sheen The eighth consecutive election whitewash of the state Congress under the president ship of Ripun Bora (now a turncoat TMC chief) and current incumbent Bhupen Bora has ultimately made us believe that once upon a time there was a secular political party in Assam named Congress which was once led by the great Bharat Ratna Gopinath Bordoloi. I sometime wonder how the party’s stalwarts, namely Bhupen Bora, Rokibul Hossain, Reikibbudin Ahmed, Bharat Narah etc are passing their leisure time in Rajiv Bhavan. It is the right time for them to stand by the side of their present mentor Rahul Gandhi who is now being grilled by the ED in the National Herald scam.
The recent road show by Bhupen Bora and others before the TV cameras as a mark of protest against the ED for summoning Rahul Gandhi for interrogation was an eye sore. Aparna Sarma Choudhury Guwahati Flash floods Flash floods in Guwahati are a major problem that raises its ugly head whenever rainfall occurs even for an hour, leading to loss of lives and property. Guwahati needs to have a proper drainage system immediately.
Throwing of plastic waste in drains unmindfully leads to clogging of drains. Locals have to be taken into confidence while constructing drains as they best know the area. Creating awareness among maids who work in houses and dump garbage on the roads despite designated areas to throw garbage, is an issue which their employers must look into.
Water outlets will have to be declogged frequently . Desiltation and dredging of the water bodies in Guwahati will have to be carried out throughout the year to enhance water carrying capacity of the natural bodies. Public and government bodies will have to work hand-in-hand in mitigating the problem of flash floods in the city.
Purabi Pathak Barua Guwahati Shiv Sena-the paper tiger As far as I am concerned there are two types of ‘senas’ in the nation who are always in the news due to wrong reasons. They are Shiv Sena, a political party of Maharashtra, and Bir Lachit Sena of Assam, both claiming to safeguard the security of the Marathas and Asomiyas in their respective states. The Shiv Sena is up in arms against the helpless migrant workers from Bihar and UP but are helpless against mafias like Dawood Ibrahim, Chota Shakeel, and other small-time gangsters.
They are shamelessly sharing power with their one time sworn enemy like the Congress just to be in power. They have thrown the ideals of their mentor, Balashaheb Thackeray to the wind. Now let us talk about our own Bir Lachit Sena which claims to follow the ideals of Bir Lachit Borphukan.
Like the Shiv Sena, they too punish the helpless Biharis, Marowaris, the Hindu Bengalis who have almost become a part of our society. They take pride in doing silly things before the TV cameras to gain cheap publicity. Unfortunately, the cadres of Bir Lachit Sena are nowhere to be seen raising their voice for protection of the xatras in Nagaon and Barpeta.
We being the sons and daughters dare the paper tiger Bir Lachit Sena to make its presence felt where the very existence of the Asomiyas are threatened by people of doubtful nationality. Else, they will be treated as a toothless tiger, or in better words, a paper tiger like the Shiv Sena. Dr Ashim Chowdhury.
