Share to Facebook Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Horizon Worlds Instagram Mark Zuckerberg went viral this week after posting screenshots from Horizon Worlds, celebrating the launch of the VR platform in Spain and France, with the internet mocking both his Mii-looking avatar and the dead, empty world behind him. Zuckerberg Facebook There were a half dozen tweets about it that racked up tens of thousands of likes. I wrote a broader article about how this keeps happening with everything Zuckerberg posts about the metaverse and Horizon Worlds over the past five years.
The point being, why would anyone trust his vision for the metaverse when he seems content that it looks like…this. That post hit the front page of reddit where I’m guessing a whole lot of Meta employees saw it. And now Zuckerberg appears to be responding directly to the question my article posted in its title, “Does Mark Zuckerberg not understand how bad his metaverse looks?” Here’s his response, which includes two screenshots of “updated” Horizon Worlds graphics for both his avatar and environments, and this caption: MORE FOR YOU ‘Demon Slayer’ Season 2 Finally Has An Actual 2021 Release Date Netflix’s ‘Squid Game’ Season 2 Not A Sure Thing, Says Director ‘Genshin Impact’ Still Refuses To Increase Anniversary Rewards, Despite Fan Outcry “Major updates to Horizon and avatar graphics coming soon.
I’ll share more at Connect. Also, I know the photo I posted earlier this week was pretty basic — it was taken very quickly to celebrate a launch. The graphics in Horizon are capable of much more — even on headsets — and Horizon is improving very quickly.
” I’m not sure what a “quickly taken photo” in a video game means, as the graphics are the graphics, but the idea here is that he’s promising big upgrades coming soon. Some have commented that at best, his new avatar looks like Fortnite riff, but we won’t really know until we see these updates live. It’s also not clear if Zuckerberg will finally take the step of giving Horizon Worlds avatars legs for the firsts time since its inception.
Horizon Instagram As chief Meta metaverse critic, am I convinced? No, I’m not. I have seen the evolution of Horizon Worlds over the years and it’s moving painfully slowly. At best, this may get up to par with like, every other basic avatar system in every video game, but again, it feels like he’s being beat out by V-tubers.
And fundamentally it’s not really just about the graphics with Mark and Meta, it’s that I have yet to be convinced of any interesting use case for his metaverse, or at least one that his virtual space does better than existing VR social hubs like VRchat, or existing video games like Minecraft, Roblox and Fortnite. It remains unclear how or why he has bet the entire future of his company on the metaverse without producing a remotely engaging vision of the concept. We’ll see when this next upgrade comes and what it actually brings.
