This classic fandom found new life when the series returned in 2005 and created a new generation of fans arguing over why their first Doctor was the best and which of the many timeless villains was the worst. Luckily fans who also loved games like Dungeons & Dragons didn’t have to wait long for an official role playing game. Cubicle 7 released Doctor Who: Adventures In Time And Space in 2009.
What better setting for an RPG than all of time and space? With the most recent change to the Doctor, the company decided to also revise and streamline the rules. Now, fans have an excellect opportunity to celebrate not one but three Doctor Who role playing games. The latest edition debuted at Gen Con with a version based on D&D Fifth Edition on its way in the next few months.
Quick fingered fans who might have missed books in the earlier edition can currently take advantage of a Humble Bundle that collects everything that’s compatible with all three games. Doctor Who: The Roleplaying Game Second Edition Cubicle 7 decided to put out a new corebook with each regeneration of the Doctor featuring updated art and photos from the newer episodes of the show. When Jodie Whittaker stepped into the role, they also decided to tak a fresh look at the rules after a decade of play.
The result is Doctor Who: The Roleplaying Game Second Edition. The book offers several modes of play. Tables can choose their favorite Doctor and companions or come up with a brand new group of time travelers.
There are even rules for time travel outside the TARDIS for groups who want to tell different stories in the same universe. The game levels the narrative playing field between the Doctor and the companions with Plot Points which can be spent to power abilities and fantastic gadgets in the story to get out of trouble.
These oints are gained by playing into character’s flaws and following classic story beats from the show like getting captured on purpose to learn more about the bad guy’s plan. This edition streamlines play by elminiating the small Traits that offered several bonuses and penalties to rolls for broader Distinctions. It encourages characters to chose a focus that drives them to their time travelling adventures.
And don’t worry about previous books being incompatible: there’s an index in the back for conversion, though the information contained in previous volumes is still very, very useful. Doctors and Daleks Some tables are hesitant to step away from Dungeons & Dragons Fifth Edition. It can be hard to get out of a comfort zone and learn a new game.
Doctors & Daleks takes many of the elements that make Doctor Who: The Roleplaying Game unique and puts them through a similar framework to the world’s most popular roleplaying game. The designers recontextualize D&D in a narrative sense. Hit points become Plot Points that can be reduced by Quips, turning the bloody combat of D&D into something that feels more like the clever speeches of the show.
Time travel never fails, but it can generate complcations that can generate several sidequests on the way to the big historical event. Doctor Who Humble Bundle Fans have an opportunity to fill up their Doctor Who RPG collections thanks to Humble Bundle. A current book bundle features 28 books of the game line, including different cores featuring different Doctors, expansions into organications such as UNTIL and adventures set during various seasons of the show.
The gem of this collection are the sourcebooks dedicated to each of the Doctors. Every one features an episode guide covering the shows during that Doctor’s seasons along with potential story seeds that might spin out of those classic adventures. Even for fans who aren’t into role playing games, those books show a lot of love for the actors and creators who built this franchise.
