Share to Facebook Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Horizon Forbidden West Guerrilla The Holy Spirit appears to be moving within Sony, as they realize that putting all their eggs into a single basket, a PlayStation console, may not be the best idea in the face of increased competition from all sources and hardware manufacturing issues. As such, we have seen movement for Sony to get a lot more involved in PC ports of their big games, doing so a bit faster and more often than they used to. But today another piece of the future has been revealed as Sony also wants that mobile games money.

Sony has purchased Savage Game Studios , which has worked in mobile games a long time, but usually helping others make games, rather than producing their own titles. Now, Sony is tasking them with leading an entirely new mobile games division at PlayStation in a move that echoes Sony buying Bungie to help the rest of their studios make live service titles. Sony wants to make sure fans know that it is not taking anything away from traditional PlayStation games, that this will be “additive.

” “Our mobile gaming efforts will be similarly additive, providing more ways for more people to engage with our content, and striving to reach new audiences unfamiliar with PlayStation and our games. Savage Game Studios is joining a newly created PlayStation Studios Mobile Division, which will operate independently from our console development and focus on innovative, on-the-go experiences based on new and existing PlayStation IP. ” God of War Sony MORE FOR YOU ‘Demon Slayer’ Season 2 Finally Has An Actual 2021 Release Date Netflix’s ‘Squid Game’ Season 2 Not A Sure Thing, Says Director ‘Genshin Impact’ Still Refuses To Increase Anniversary Rewards, Despite Fan Outcry So, the idea is that Savage Game Studios will make, or help other studios make, mobile games based on PlayStation IP, meaning we could see mobile entries in series like God of War, The Last of Us, Uncharted, Spider-Man, Ghost of Tsushima, Horizon Zero Dawn or others in the future.

No specific games or IPs were mentioned, however. I do wonder what form this will take, if it’s standalone games or something like say, The Last of Us Part 2 Factions getting a mobile version when it releases in addition to the console version. Microsoft’s big mobile move recently, other than the ability to play cloud titles on phones, is actually the purchase of Activision Blizzard, where the third piece of that is the most valuable, King, the Candy Crush-making mobile arm that comes with hundreds of millions of DAUs and a similar amount of revenue.

We have not heard about Microsoft specifically developing mobile games based on its IPs, however, and they seem instead to be content with the King acquisition and streaming normal games to mobile, at the moment. Obviously there is a ton of money in the mobile space, but I think something like God of War GO or Horizon Forbidden Pocket would have to be very impressive indeed to wins existing PlayStation fans over, or significantly help expand PlayStation’s reach. And then there are all the debates about mobile game monetization that will have to be had.
