SPPU to set up campuses in Kazakhstan, Nepal & Georgia

Pune: Savitribai Phule Pune University administration is looking to establish three offshore campuses in Kazakhstan , Nepal and even Georgia , following a good response to the Qatar campus that was started three years ago. The proposals for the new campuses are being finalized, university official said. The university has also received Rs 25 crore from the Union Department of Biotechnology to set up a state-of-the-art genome sequencing lab.

Besides, a seven-storied hostel for girls will come up by 2025 to accommodate more students on the campus. SPPU vice-chancellor Suresh Gosavi confirmed these developments at a press conference on Monday, which was held on the backdrop of the 123rd convocation ceremony to be held on Wednesday. “We have been receiving offers to open new campuses in these countries.

We already have students from these countries studying at Pune campus. So, we are certain about the response. We are hoping that in a year at least, one of these campuses will be set up.

We are in talks with the governments,” Gosavi said. A total of 300 students are pursuing traditional undergraduate courses in science, arts, commerce and management at the Qatar campus of SPPU. “Established on a self-sustained basis, the model has been successful in Qatar,” Gosavi said.

Talking about the new genome sequencing lab, Gosavi said the project, titled Indian Medicinal Plants Genome Initiative, would have 15 research and administrative staffers. “The facility could be used nationally and be developed on a revenue-generation model where anyone could approach us for getting their samples sequenced on pay-per-sample basis,” he said. “The Centre will accelerate research in the field of genomics and data science.

It will help train manpower and also help the society by contributing in the field of genomics research, medicine and agriculture,” he added. SPPU and the Ramkumar Rathi Group have collaborated to establish a centre that will undertake yoga research. The centre will focus on areas, such as education and training for online and offline courses, integrated health advice, community extension and outreach, among others.
