Summernats brawl: Wild moment fight breaks out between security and attendees at car festival in Canberra By Freddy Pawle For Daily Mail Australia Published: 23:02 EST, 6 January 2024 | Updated: 23:02 EST, 6 January 2024 e-mail View comments Wild footage has emerged of security appearing to get into a physical altercation with attendees at one of Australia’s biggest car shows. The brawl unfolded at Summernats which began at the Exhibition Park in Canberra (EPIC) on Thursday. Some 120,000 people were expected to pass through the gates on Sunday as crowds were drawn to the mullet competition, races and a fireworks display.

The footage however showed a group of attendees staunching up to about a dozen security guards who appeared to be herding them off of a street. Water bottles and beer cans could be seen being thrown at the security guards as tensions increased between them and the many shirtless spectators. The spectators could be heard jeering at the guards before one man started pushing a guard when an all-out brawl broke out.

Wild footage has caught a brawl breaking out between security and attendees at the Summernats car enthusiast festival on Saturday afternoon (pictured) The footage showed the tensions growing as one shirtless attendee continued to back away from the security guards while yelling at them. One of the security guards could be heard yelling ‘f**k you’ at the man as another spectator held him back. The security guards pushed forward and start punching spectators in the head.

One attendee fell to the ground and was barely able to protect himself as one guard tried to kick him. One man wearing an Australian flag as a cape tried to push one of the security guards away from the downed spectator before being staunched by another guard. The altercation quickly fizzed out as one guard tried to keep other spectators from swarming to the brawl with the group of security eventually leaving the area.

ACT Police confirmed they are ‘aware’ of the incident and are investigating the matter. ‘Investigations into the incident are ongoing and no arrests have been made at this time,’ a spokesman said. ‘No further comment will be made while investigations are ongoing.

The event brings in rev-heads from across the country to the ACT and about $20million in tourism with them. Over 2,500 cars are on exhibition during the four-day festival to entertain the crowds with burnout competitions and other exhibitions.

However the festival hasn’t been clear of controversy after Luke Newsome, 30, died after falling off the back of a ute at Summernats 2017. Daily Mail Australia contacted Summernats and the security company for comment.
