A white Hyundai Sonata, which had Queensland number plates, was seen tearing through the city as it headed towards Parramatta on Thursday, with a male driver and female passenger inside. The car had a severely banged up bonnet and was eventually brought to a stop when it crashed into a traffic light near the North Rocks Shopping Centre just after 11am.

The police chase had gone on for 45 minutes and started on the M5 in Bankstown on Thursday morning, with as many as five police vehicles in tow. Miraculously, no one was injured despite the car swerving onto footpaths and driving well over the speed limit, as well as on the other side of the road, to evade police.

The driver also repeatedly sped through red lights, intersections and roundabouts, and weaved around other motorists who fortunately came away unscathed. At times the police cars pursuing the Hyundai had to pull back as the situation became increasingly more dangerous. Police jumped on the car as soon as it hit the traffic pole following a 45-minute long chase The extraordinary car chase was broadcast live on major TV stations with Nine and Seven filming the American-style pursuit from a helicopter.

Channel Seven’s The Morning Show host Larry Edmur expressed his shock as the police chase unfolded. ‘Oh my God that is so dangerous,’ he said. Police immediately swarmed the Hyundai after it crashed into the traffic pole.

Plain-clothed officers in unmarked cars had also been tailing the car, with the occupants quickly removed and pinned to the ground before being placed in handcuffs. Police were then seen removing items of clothing and other belongings from the car. The Hyundai was brought to a stop right beside a school.
