Blizzard Entertainment Overwatch 2 could hardly have had a rougher launch day . There were significant server problems, with players having to endure lengthy queues to get in.
The servers were also hit with two DDoS attacks, which required an “all hands on deck” response from the Overwatch team. MORE FROM FORBES Overwatch 2’s Brutal Launch Day Issues Were The Cherry On Top Of A Messy Debut By Kris Holt In an update , Overwatch 2 community manager Jodie Grace noted that Blizzard has addressed some of the problems and is in the process of taking care of other issues. However, for the time being, you’ll still likely have to endure queues as you try to get into the game.
Blizzard has patched a server that plays a key role in the login process, which should make the login procedure more reliable. Another server update is in progress that should reduce the number of disconnects players are encountering in-game. While waiting to get into Overwatch 2 , many players have seen the number of people ahead of them in the queue fluctuate.
I’ve seen it go from 40,000 to 2,000 and back again. There’s a reason for that. net, then one through the game itself,” Grace wrote. “This process is usually invisible to players, but was being seen in real time. We have made changes to simplify the queuing process, so players should now only be experiencing the one queue before entering the game.
” In addition, Blizzard is adding more nodes to lessen the pressure on the player database, which is getting overloaded. That was creating a backup in the login queue, which led to some people dropping out of the queue or not being able to log in. However, adding more nodes will take a little time.
Devs and engineers are doing so slowly to avoid additional disruption. While Blizzard is handling that, it’s having to throttle queues “in order to protect the player database as much as we can while we scale — this feels bad in the short-term, but once it’s done, will greatly improve the experience for players across multiple fronts moving forward,” Grace noted. Elsewhere, there was an update on missing cosmetics and progress due to account merging issues.
Good news: you haven’t actually lost any items or progress. Grace noted that, in around half of reported cases, players haven’t actually completed the account merge process. There was a bug that meant the launch build of Overwatch 2 didn’t display the account merge prompt on some consoles.
Blizzard rolled out a fix for one aspect of that today, and it’s working to resolve other UI issues. If you have gone through the account merge process and noticed that some of your stuff is missing, that’s because it’s taking longer than expected for the systems to transfer everything over from Overwatch 1. Blizzard will deploy a client-side fix for that next week (it’s unable to do so until then).
In the meantime, it’s looking into fixes on the server side. Finally, a lot of players coming over from Overwatch 1 found that heroes and items that shouldn’t have been locked were closed off. That’s because these players were inadvertently slotted into the new-user experience.
Logging out and back in should resolve that (if you don’t mind potentially having to wait in a long queue to get back in). Grace added that the launch-day DDoS attacks made all of these problems worse, but noted that there have been no other attacks since last night. Hopefully, a lot of the issues that plagued the game at the outset are clearing up and that you can log in with more ease very soon.
Fingers crossed Blizzard can right the ship quickly so that we can all simply enjoy a very fun video game . Meanwhile, most players coming over from Overwatch 1 will no longer need to add a phone number to their Battle. net account.
