It is considered to be a matter of pride and bravery to climb the highest mountain peaks in the world. But there is one mountain which human beings have not been able to conquer to this date.

Even though the height of this mountain is 21,778 feet, far less than Everest. For those wondering, the mountain in question here is Mount Kailash. Standing in the remote southwest corner of Tibet in the Himalayan range, the mountain is the source of some of the most important rivers in Asia.

Also called the Gang Tise or Gang Rinpoche in Tibet, its peak is precious and prominently symmetrical. The Tibetan Buddhists believe that Mount Kailash is the abode of Buddha Demchok who represents supreme harmony.

Also, they consider this mountain to be the place where Bon became one of the major religions of Tibet. Legends have it that Milarepa, the famous Tibetan yogi, once challenged Naro-Bonchung, the Bon representative. The two fought a great magical battle, but neither could win.

Milarepa is also considered to be the only person who has been able to climb the mountain in history. In Jainism, Mount Kailash is known as Mount Ashtapada. The Jains believe that it was in the mountain that the creator of their faith, Rishabhanatha, attained freedom from rebirth.

Hence, Mount Kaliash, a mountain shaped like a diamond and surrounded by a rugged and dry landscape, is an important pilgrim site for all four faiths. Every year, thousands of pilgrims go to the place to seek the blessings of their respective deities. Also, it is believed that circumambulating the sacred mountain would wash away a person’s sins and bring good fortune.

While the Hindu and Buddhist pilgrims walk around in a clockwise direction, the Jain and Bon followers walk around counterclockwise. Why Mount Kailash has not been conquered yet? The Hindus consider the act of climbing Mount Kailash forbidden for fear of trespassing the sanctity of the mountain and disturbing the divine energies residing there. According to Tibetan legends, a monk named Milarepa once reached the top of the mountain.

When he returned, he forewarned everyone to avoid bothering the God resting high up in the peak. If we keep aside the religious beliefs, Mount Kailash, due to its shape, has been considered difficult to climb by the mountaineers. Unlike Everest, Kailash is very steep, which makes it extremely hard for anyone to reach the summit.
