TikTok parent’s music streaming app exits India market after this demand from the Indian government

TikTok owner ByteDance’s music streaming app Resso is exiting the Indian market due to government scrutiny of its data handling practices. Resso announced its decision after the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology sought information on data processing. Resso’s exit marks the end of ByteDance’s last consumer-facing venture in India after TikTok and other apps were banned in 2020.

TikTok owner ByteDance ‘s music streaming app Resso is exiting INdia market. The music streaming app, Resso, will shut its service in India effective January 31. Reason: Indian government’s scrutiny of the company’s data handling practices.

According to a report in Economic Times (ET), Resso announced its decision to exit India market after the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (Meity) sought information on the processing of data of Indians. The ministry had reportedly sought Resso’s response following allegations of improper use of proprietary algorithms to process the data of Indians emerged. “The app had not provided any response to the queries in the notices that were sent to them and has instead chosen to exit the market,” a government official told ET.

Resso was earlier removed from the Google Play Store and Apple App Store following an order by the Indian government. Resso’s exit marks the end of ByteDance’s last consumer-facing venture in the country after its short-video app TikTok and others were banned in 2020 over national security concerns. What Resso said on the exit “Unfortunately, owing to local market conditions, we can no longer continue to serve users of Resso in India,” a ByteDance spokesperson told ET.

“We have therefore taken the decision to shut down Resso and its associated operations on January 31. Users will be offered a refund of their remaining subscription fees. ” Resso’s Indian Journey Comes to an End Launched in 2020, Resso had grown to become ByteDance’s biggest bet in the Indian market after the TikTok ban.

With over 125 million downloads, it was the company’s most successful app in the country. Despite its popularity, Resso couldn’t weather the storm of government scrutiny and data concerns. Future of ByteDance in India Uncertain Resso’s exit leaves ByteDance without any direct consumer-facing presence in India.

While the company remains interested in the market, its past experiences and the current regulatory environment make a swift return unlikely.
