9% in 2017, and enough to make it the country’s third biggest selling TV brand), Toshiba is expanding its UK TV offering for the latter stages of 2022 with a bold selection of ranges that introduce both a new step-up picture quality tier and a new operating system. Toshiba’s new ‘premium’ range will be the QA5Ds. Available in 43, 50, 55 and 65-inch sizes, their star attraction is that they’re the first Toshiba TVs to use Quantum Dot colour technology rather than the usual LCD colour filters.

This should enable them to deliver brighter, subtler and purer colours than Toshiba TVs have managed before – even though Toshiba is managing to deliver these apparent Quantum Dot-inspired improvements without sacrificing the reputation for value that’s served it so well in establishing itself so strongly in the UK TV market. The 43-inch QA5D, to give you some idea of pricing, will cost just £399. That really isn’t a lot for a Quantum Dot LCD TV.

Photo: Toshiba The QA5D’s new Quantum Dot colours are backed up by a full implementation of Toshiba’s TRU Picture Engine, complete with elements focused on resolution/scaling, backlight control (based around breaking images into small zones for enhanced analysis) and motion handling. There’s support, too, for both Dolby Atmos sound and Dolby Vision HDR, while the Quantum Dot images are supported by an Onkyo-developed speaker system.

The QA5D’s smart system, finally, is built around Android TV, complete with Google Assistant voice recognition and an app collection that includes Apple TV+. The models carrying a new operating system (new for Toshiba, at any rate), are the UF3Ds. These are built around the Amazon Fire TV smart platform, with an interface that’s to all intents and purposes identical to that delivered by Amazon’s latest external streaming devices. As you’d expect with any TV sporting a Fire TV operating system, the UF3Ds benefit from built in Alexa voice control support, while on the picture and sound quality fronts the UF3Ds again support both Dolby Vision HDR and Dolby Atmos sound, as well as getting the full Toshiba TRU picture engine.

These sets will be available in 43, 50, 55 and 65-inch screen sizes from Amazon, Argos and Currys, with prices starting at £369. These are still 4K sets, and maintain the support for premium AV features including Dolby Vision HDR, Dolby Atmos sound and the full TRU picture processing engine. They differ from the UF3Ds predominantly by switching to Toshiba’s own Linux operating system – though they retain built-in Amazon Alexa voice recognition support. The UK4Ds are available in 43, 50, 55 and 65-inch screen sizes from Amazon, AO, Currys and Very, with prices starting at £349.

Toshiba will also be offering a more entry level Android TV option if you’d prefer that to the Fire TV and Toshiba OS options, in the shape of the UA3Ds. These 4K models will be available in 43, 50, and 55-inch versions, and despite pricing starting at just £349 they will again get TRU picture engine support, Dolby Vision HDR and an Onkyo-designed audio system. Rounding out Toshiba’s latest UK TV range will be the LK3Cs, a pair of 32- and 43-inch HD resolution TVs aimed predominantly at the second room market.

Despite not being 4K models, the LK3Cs will still get HDR support (though not Dolby Vision), and will still carry Toshiba’s TRU picture engine. As you would expect with any good second room TV these days, moreover, the LK3Cs carry a smart TV system in the shape of Toshiba’s own (exceptionally easy to use) platform, and can be operated hands-free courtesy of Alexa voice functionality and a far-field mic built into the TV. The LK3Cs will be available from Amazon, AO, Argos and Very, starting at just £229.
