Share to Facebook Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin House Of The Dragon Credit: HBO House Of The Dragon wrapped up its first season Sunday evening with a stellar finale that set the stage for the coming civil war, known in Westerosi history as the Dance of Dragons. It was a powerful ending to a tremendous first season that, in many ways, defied all our expectations after the disastrous 8th season of Game Of Thrones. MORE FROM FORBES ‘House Of The Dragon’ Season 1 Finale Recap And Review: ‘The Black Queen’ By Erik Kain It also ended on something of a cliffhanger and many viewers—myself included—are eager for the second season when we can find out just how Rhaenyra (Emma D’Arcy) and Daemon (Matt Smith) will respond to the tragedy that just befell their family.

It will be fire and blood, of course, but even those of us who read George R. R. Martin’s Fire And Blood history from whence this tale has been adapted, aren’t entirely sure how the show will change things.

So far its creators have made a lot of really excellent changes to the original story—enriching and humanizing characters like Viserys (Paddy Considine) and Aemond (Ewan Mitchell) and weaving together more complicated relationships for people like Rhaenyra and Alicent (Olivia Cooke). So when does Season 2 arrive on HBO and HBO Max? There has been no official announcement, and there have been a number of conflicting reports about when filming will even begin again. It sounds as though production is already underway, however, and that filming will begin no later than Spring of 2023.

It stands to reason that if filming begins on Season 2 in April of 2023, that we’ll get Season 2 on HBO 15 months later, in 2024. However, it’s important to remember that April of 2021 was still deep in the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic, which had a serious impact on all TV and film production and timelines.

It’s entirely possible that with fewer restrictions Season 2 will take less time to produce. On the other hand, Season 2 is going to be a lot more action-packed as we head into the midst of a major war, replete with fire-breathing dragons. These big set-piece battles and massive CGI undertakings might end up taking even longer.

One way or another, it appears we are a long ways out from Season 2, which is a real shame. Then again, I’m pretty used to waiting long periods of time for all things Game Of Thrones. If I can wait over a decade for Winds Of Winter I can wait a year-and-a-half for Season 2 of House of the Dragon.

But that doesn’t mean I have to like it. I’ve reached out to HBO for any further details they might be able to provide and will update this post if and when I hear back. What did you think of Season 1? Let me know on Twitter or Facebook .
