Answer by Aaron Ahuvia, Author of The Things We Love: How Our Passions Connect Us. . .

, on Quora : I’m a consumer psychologist who has been researching materialism for 30 years. Materialists are more motivated and excited by the purchase of a product more than the actual use of the product. Furthermore, they enjoy getting a raise in pay more than they actually enjoy the new lifestyle it provides.

Therefore they never have enough. In a survey, PNC Advisors asked wealthy people their current net worth and about the amount of money they felt they needed to “live a worry-free future. ” People with a net worth of $1 million said they would need$2.

4 million. People with a net worth of $5 million said they would need $10. 4 million.

People with a net worth of $10 million said they would need $18. 1 million. So when people’s net worth went up, the amount they felt they needed also went up.

Furthermore, there are two reasons why this survey understates this effect compared the question “When is it enough for a materialistic person?” First, the survey asked about the amount of money these people felt they needed to “live comfortably,” but the Quora question is about how much is “enough. ” People can have sufficient money to live comfortably but still not feel they have “enough” because they want to live lavishly, not just comfortably. Second, this survey didn’t focus on highly materialistic people.

And just because someone has a high net worth doesn’t mean they are materialistic. If the survey had only asked highly materialistic people, the amount of money they would say they needed to live comfortably would likely have been much higher. Bottom line, materialism is a state of mind in which you never feel you have “enough.
