Share to Facebook Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Destiny 2 Bungie There is really only one major question I have about Lightfall, Destiny 2’s upcoming expansion being revealed in a showcase next month , with everything else being secondary. Are we finally getting that fifth subclass? And what is it? Previously, the running theory was that Destiny 2’s last expansion, The Witch Queen, would bring us another new darkness-based subclass. The idea was that in the rotting swamps of Savathun’s Throne World, that would be a perfect time to get us a long-theorized “poison/decay/soulfire” green subclass, as it really seemed like it would vibe with the theme of the expansion.

Instead, Bungie decided that they could not continue to leave its old, original three light subclasses behind, and before they moved on to new ones, the wanted to “stasis-ify” everything with a new 3. 0 rework of each element. That has…gone very well so far! I’ve very much enjoyed both the void 3.

0 and solar 3. 0 reworks, and though they haven’t been without some measure of controversy (what in Destiny is without it?), I certainly agree that this update was badly needed, and I’m sure arc 3. 0 will be similarly useful next season.

The weird thing, however, is that if arc 3. 0 is kept under wraps, as it appears like it’s going to be, and there is a new subclass, those may somehow be getting unveiled on the same day, which is odd.

Unlike The Witch Queen, we have effectively no sense at this point what Lightfall is about at all . Like, The Witness is coming, but we have zero idea what essential elements of the expansion will arrive with him, like a new patrol zone, or which enemy race will be the main focus of the expansion. I do not believe Bungie has anything insane like a fully new enemy race hidden up their sleeves for this, but I mean, who knows.

I suppose the one time I stop guessing that could happen could be the one time it actually does happen. What I am not changing my view about is the theme of the new subclass, which I do believe will remain poison or decay focused. We already have early bones for that subclass in place with the poison “element” existing with Osteo Striga, Thorn and Necrotic Grips already.

The only thing that’s changed since my Witch Queen predictions is that I no longer think this will be rooted in Hive Soulfire or Throne World swamp magic, but the new idea is that the infestation of Egregore on the Leviathan and in the HELM maybe the basis of that subclass. Destiny 2 Bungie We know Egregore’s main purpose is as a neural network linking pyramids and disciples to The Witness. But Eris also describes it as an “impure” form of Darkness, in contrast to stasis being a “pure” form.

Sounds like something you could build a subclass out of, and in this season, all the seasonal lore on the armor is dedicated to Eris and Drifter studying the uses of Egregore. I think that’s where this is going. I’d be frankly pretty surprised if Bungie bailed on a fifth subclass for Lightfall, given what they’ve said in the past and the schedule of the 3.

0 revamps. The “poison” concept seems to have been getting built up for years already, and I have a hunch we’ll see it in the showcase next month. Stay tuned.
