Microsoft released the Windows 11 2022 update (also known as 22H2) last month, but as normal with major Windows updates, the release was staggered to prevent Microsoft’s servers being overwhelmed by the demand, and so that Microsoft has a chance to remedy any serious bugs that weren’t caught in beta testing before everyone installs it. The 2022 update is now available to anyone who manually checks for updates on their Windows 11 system.

The easiest way to do that is to type ‘update’ into the Windows 11 search facility and open the Windows Update Settings link that should appear in the search results. At the top of the screen, you should be presented with an option to download and install the refreshed operating system if you haven’t already done so, provided your PC meets the hardware requirements. However, in a note about known issues with the 2022 update , Microsoft admits that the update may still be withheld from some customers with compatible PCs.

“If we detect that your device might have an issue, such as an application incompatibility, we might put a safeguard hold in place and not offer the update until that issue is resolved,” the note states. Among the safeguard holds listed by Microsoft is an issue with installed printers, which might only allow you to use the printer’s default settings, preventing features such as double-sided printing or changing paper size. Microsoft won’t offer the update to PCs with affected printers installed.

Another safeguard hold is placed on PCs using selected 11th Generation Intel Core processors, where Microsoft has discovered compatibility issues with drivers for Intel Smart Sound Technology. Among the highlights are Focus Sessions, which make it easier to get on with work without distracting notifications, and a much-improved Snap Layouts system that makes it easier to work with multiple windows on devices with large screens. Microsoft has also boosted Windows 11’s accessibility with features such as Live Captions, which provide a transcript of audio being played through the PC’s speakers or headphones, and Voice Access, which allows people to navigate the PC using voice commands, rather than mouse and keyboard.
