Credit: WWE Raw WWE Raw from Madison Square Garden showcased the first WWE Raw in a new era with Triple H as the head of creative. Bruce Prichard will report to Triple H as WWE continues to undergo changes following Vince McMahon’s abrupt retirement.
While Vince McMahon is reportedly available in a limited capacity, the walls continue to close in on the once-omnipotent former WWE Chairman. WWE 8-K SEC filings suggested “[WWE] has also received, and may receive in the future, regulatory, investigative and enforcement inquiries, subpoenas or demands arising from, related to, or in connection with these matters. ” This suggests McMahon’s increasingly ugly hush money scandal is far from over, and with HBO’s Real Sports among mainstream news outlets looking into McMahon’s WWE probe, the worst may be yet to come.

It was definitely a different change in pace and an immediate sign that we are certainly in a new era. From there, Roman Reigns opened the show.
WWE showed some great shots of the sold-out arena during Roman Reigns’ entrance. Some boos were definitely piped in as Reigns posed on the apron. Fans were even heard chanting “Roman” as Reigns began his promo, though there were also some legit boos peppered in.
Both Reigns and Paul Heyman had problems with WWE’s live mic, but Heyman recovered brilliantly by saying the sound guy was from New Jersey and that he’d be “the next person out the door. ” Paul Heyman continues to find himself in a situation where he’s cutting promos on behalf of both Brock Lesnar and Roman Reigns. Despite the cold-open brawl, WWE Raw’s opening with a long Bloodline promo, interrupted by Theory, was paint-by-the-numbers.
Roman Reigns said to Theory “your daddy’s not here anymore. . .
” causing a huge reaction from MSG, who chanted “who’s your daddy?!” Theory attacked Jey Uso with the MITB briefcase, and Jey sold it like he had just been hit by a schoolboy with a lunch pail. Drew McIntyre def. Theory by Disqualification Theory was introduced and interrupted by Drew McIntyre.
When McIntyre showed up, announcers urged Theory to leave the ring like he was some enhancement talent who didn’t stand a chance. After being embarrassed by The Bloodline, he was promptly manhandled by Drew McIntyre. WWE has a habit of booking the Money in the Bank Winner poorly, but tonight’s presentation of Austin Theory was just a few notches up from Otis.
Theory was salvaged by going toe-to-toe with Drew McIntyre and a disqualification finish. McIntyre and Lashley def. Sheamus and Theory This was the fourth consecutive segment Theory appeared in to start the show, so win or lose, the office clearly remains behind him with or without Daddy.
Bobby Lashley ate a couple of stiff knees in this match, one of which from Sheamus diving off the top rope onto his back. Rey Mysterio Anniversary Celebration Rey Mysterio thanked Dean Malenko, Konnan, Batista, Kurt Angle, Edge and Eddie Guerrero, who received very loud chants of “Eddie!” Mysterio’s awesome promo brought out The Judgment Day for a tag team match against the Mysterios. I’d be surprised if this didn’t lead to a Dominik Mysterio heel turn.
Finn Balor tried the Eddie Guerrero spot, failed, and Rey Mysterio turned it around on Balor. Balor immediately charged at Mysterio, which prevented a disqualification. Mysterio received his moment in the sun and even got the winning pinfall.
No heat to speak of. Maybe it is a brand new day. Sadly, the good vibes didn’t last as Rey Mysterio was attacked after the backstage party.
Bianca Belair and Becky Lynch Brawl This segment was a bit awkward as Bianca Belair continuously interrupted Becky Lynch (by design), only for the two to immediately start brawling. I stand by my assertion that Bianca Belair will defeat Becky Lynch in 26 seconds at WWE SummerSlam. Alexa Bliss def.
Doudrop Backstage, Dominik continued to drop the ball when it came to protecting his father against The Judgment Day. Though Doudrop and Nikki A. S.
H. have been stuck in neutral of late, surprisingly, so has Alexa Bliss. Impaulsive TV with Logan Paul Logan Paul announced his brother was going to be fighting in MSG next weekend, and of course, he was booed vociferously.
Though fans in New York were in no hurry to cheer Logan Paul, there also wasn’t much heat for this segment in general. Perhaps Paul and Miz already appearing to start the show took away from this segment. Maryse walked to the ring with with a pair of large balls and cut an intentionally awkward promo since English is her second language.
The exchange was painful to watch and I haven’t been so happy to see The Miz in while. Thankfully, Paul’s final line of “you have bigger balls than your husband,” landed. I guess all’s well that ends well.
Fans cheered a Miz and Ciampa beatdown over alleged babyface Logan Paul, and even chanted “one more time!” AJ Styles and Dolph Ziggler def. Alpha Academy Chad Gable cut a very good heel promo before this match, even getting to make a cheap-heat diss at the New York Knicks. AJ Styles and Dolph Ziggler have teamed before, and WWE really needs to consider pairing them for a serious tag team run.
The Bloodline def. The Street Profits and Riddle Montez Ford and Angelo Dawkins wore jerseys similar to the New York Knicks. Ford was busted up badly as his left eye was gushing blood.
The referee had to temporarily stop the match to check on him. Ford’s blood sparked countless TV-14 tweets. By the time they returned from break, Ford’s face was considerably cleaned up.
Surprisingly, Roman Reigns beat Riddle clean in the middle of the ring. This might bode well for Riddle’s SummerSlam match against Seth Rollins, who beat down Riddle after this match. There was even an obligatory staredown between Reigns and Rollins.
