Share to Facebook Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Yamaha has announced that it’s finally completed a firmware update that adds support for two key gaming features to its popular RX-A and RX-V AV receivers.

Available now for download from Yamaha’s MusicCast app and soon from individual product download pages (I’ll provide links to these later), the new firmware lets the HDMI loop through systems of the affected AVR models handle the Auto Low Latency Mode (ALLM) and variable refresh rate (VRR) features now supported by the latest games consoles and PCs. ALLM enables displays to recognise when a console or PC is outputting a game or a video source, and switch in and out of its fast-response gaming mode accordingly. The VRR support enables a display to adjust its refresh rates in tandem with how they change in a game, to avoid screen tearing.

The new Yamaha update follows on from one launched back in April that added support for 4K/120Hz gaming passthrough to many of the brand’s latest AVRS, and will be available for the following Yamaha models: the RX-A8A, RX-A6A, RX-A4A, RX-A2A, RX-V6A, RX-V4A, TSR-700, and TSR-400. The update is numbered Ver. 1.

[+] loop through. Photo: Yamaha The new features will only work, of course, if both the source and display devices connected to the AVRs also support ALLM and VRR. In addition, getting the VRR feature to work entails setting the HDMI Video Format in the Setup menu to 8K Mode.

So the Lipsync and Video Mode menu options will no longer be available when ALLM data is detected, while with VRR in play, the Video Mode: Processing options aren’t available on the RX-A8A, RX-A6A and RX-A4A, and the 4K Upscaling option is no longer available on the RX-A2A, RX-V6A, RX-V4A, TSR-700 and TSR-400.
