[+] Washington, DC on January 11, 2022. – Five letters, six attempts, and only one word per day: the formula for “Wordle” is simple, but for the past few weeks this online game has been stirring up social networks in the United States, and has since been adapted for a French-speaking audience. Tens or hundreds of thousands of people still are, even if it’s not showing up on social media feeds with its little boxes quite as much any more.
And if you have been playing, you may have noticed that the month of July has been a little…difficult. Turns out, you’re not alone in thinking this. I just read a pretty interesting thread from the guy who runs Save My Wordle , a site to help people find answers without failing, and his data shows that on average, the number of guesses required to get words in July has gone up.
Here’s his data: January: 4 guesses February: 3. 72 guesses March: 4. 1 guesses April: 4.
01 guesses May: 3. 99 guesses June: 3. 99 guesses July: 4.
17 guesses It may not sound like a lot, but he promises that 0. 18 increase means a lot more people are having to go to 4-5 words as opposed to 3-4, which has been more standard. What were those hard words? Going back through an archive, I’ll say that a whole bunch of these really do stand out as being a lot harder than normal words have been in other months.
Bolding the ones I’d consider a lot more difficult than usual: July 27th Wordle 402 = MOTTO July 26th Wordle 402 = POWER July 25th Wordle 401 = MIDGE July 24th Wordle 400 = TRYST July 23rd Wordle 399 = APHID July 22nd Wordle 398 = TRITE July 21st Wordle 397 = BOBBY July 20th Wordle 396 = ANGRY July 19th Wordle 395 = FLOCK July 18th Wordle 394 = WACKY July 17th Wordle 393 = ROOMY July 16th Wordle 392 = AUGUR July 15th Wordle 391 = WEDGE July 14th Wordle 390 = LIVER July 13th Wordle 389 = BLAND July 12th Wordle 388 = NIGHT July 11th Wordle 387 = MADAM July 10th Wordle 386 = BERTH July 9th Wordle 385 = STEAD July 8th Wordle 384 = VOICE July 7th Wordle 383 = AGAPE July 6th Wordle 382 = FLUFF July 5th Wordle 381 = FIELD July 4th Wordle 380 = SEVER July 3rd Wordle 379 = LILAC July 2nd Wordle 378 = EGRET July 1st Wordle 377 = PINTO MORE FOR YOU ‘Demon Slayer’ Season 2 Finally Has An Actual 2021 Release Date Netflix’s ‘Squid Game’ Season 2 Not A Sure Thing, Says Director ‘Genshin Impact’ Still Refuses To Increase Anniversary Rewards, Despite Fan Outcry It’s not necessarily about whether you know the word itself, it’s also about the letter structure. While we may know all the word “FLUFF” for instance, how often would you be expecting three of the five letters of a word to be “F”? The real question is whether or not the New York Times is doing this on purpose or not, skewing the words to be harder and potentially more engaging. There’s no firm way to know that, but the theory is that this may simply just be a random outlier where this month has more hard words jammed into it than past months through chance alone.
We’ll have to wait and see if the trend continues in August, to see if we can form a pattern. Follow me on Twitter , YouTube , Facebook and Instagram . Subscribe to my free weekly content round-up newsletter, God Rolls .
