Share to Facebook Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Zoom will force users to update their software getty Zoom videoconferencing users will be forced to update their software at least every three months, the company has announced. A recently published support document, as first spotted by The Register , says that users will be forced to update their Zoom software or they won’t be allowed to join or host calls. Those who don’t want to wait for new software to download and install before joining a call will be allowed to use the Zoom web client instead, although that doesn’t have all the features of the full-blown software.

Zoom says the enforced updates are necessary to protect customers. “Starting this November, Zoom will be enforcing a new minimum version every 90 days,” the company’s support messages reads . “This change is in line with industry practices and designed to help ensure that Zoom users receive the latest Zoom features, as well as any privacy and security enhancements we make to the platform.

” The company warns that customers may be required to update their software more frequently if serious security bugs are discovered. “Please note that while there will be a minimum Zoom client version required, we may require additional updates outside of this release window to address additional security or compliance features,” Zoom states. The new rules will apply to both computer and mobile apps.

The Fast version is for “those interested in the latest features and functionality” and provides the latest features as soon as they become available. The Slow track is designed for those who don’t want to update their software as frequently, but instead want a “more mature feature set” that’s been previously road tested by Fast track users.

“Clients on the slow track will likely only see updates every 1-2 months,” Zoom states.
