Police were called at around 6:45am on Friday morning after reports of a crash during heavy rain on the Barton Highway near Casuarina Lane at Jeir, near Murrumbateman in New South Wales ‘, north of Canberra.

The highway has been closed in both directions since around 7am after emergency services from both ACT and NSW, including three rescue helicopters, attended the scene. Holiday traffic was seen to quickly build up either side of the accident scene. On arrival at the scene officers from Hume Police District found a Ford Ranger utility and a Mitsubishi Triton utility had collided.

‘The female driver and male passenger of the Mitsubishi, and a male driver and male passenger in the Ford died at the scene,’ NSW Police said in a statement. ‘They have not been formally identified. ‘ The Easter Weekend is off to horror start after two cars collided at around 6:45am, Friday, on the Barton Highway, leaving four people dead and another injured and in hospital Another male passenger of the Ford was treated by NSW Ambulance at the scene and has been taken to hospital in an unknown condition.

The ages of those involved in the crash are not known at this time. NSW Fire and Rescue attempted to ‘cut out’ several passengers who were trapped in the wreckage at around 8:30am. A crime scene has been established and police are conducting investigations into the circumstances surrounding the crash.

As inquiries continue, anyone with dashcam vision or further information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000. Emergency services, including three rescue helicopters, attended the scene at around 7am and closed the Barton Highway in both directions shortly after Emergency services had to ‘cut out’ several passengers that were trapped within the wreckage at about 8:30am Emergency services have urged Easter travellers to avoid the highway as it could be closed in both directions for some time. Traffic NSW has advised those travelling southbound to divert to Murrumbateman Road and Sutton Road and join the Federal Highway in Canberra.

Those travelling northbound from Canberra on the Federal Highway should use Sutton Road and connect to Murrumbateman Road to avoid the crash and then rejoin the Barton Highway.
