Anita Birges, from Sydney , cleaned the key interior spots of her car – including the steering wheel, gear stick and door handles – using antibacterial wipes. While the areas didn’t look dirty, the three wipes were left with brown marks on each one, and the steering wheel was the filthiest.

‘I’m always shocked at the amount of dirt and grime that comes off. It’s pretty gross,’ she said. Anita said the quick chore only took five minutes to complete all three areas.

The short video has since been viewed more than 24,000 times but some disagreed with the method for one reason. ‘I wouldn’t use antibacterial wipes on the interior,’ one person wrote. A second claimed: ‘The anti-bacterial wipes aren’t good for cars, cause it makes the surface go off eventually, so I would choose another product but nothing alcohol based, cause that is the issue in making the interior plastic that seals everything go off.

‘ But according to the car detailers at Tempe Honda, disinfectant wipes are suitable to use and won’t cause any damage. ‘When considering how to sanitise your car, one of the most effective methods is to use household disinfectant wipes that will both kill germs and clean your surfaces. You can use them on most hard surfaces but focus on the areas you touch the most often,’ the business wrote on the website.

‘I do clean like that plus I wipe with a damp microfiber cloth and then a dry one to remove any product,’ another wrote. ‘I used to have a mini van. When I had a car load of kids.

I would give each one a wipe or two and tell them to clean their areas. It wasn’t perfect but it wasn’t bad. Plus it made my car smell really good,’ a third added.
