(Photo by Mark Weiss/Getty Images) Getty Images Back in August it was revealed that the surviving members of Pantera, which include vocalist Phil Anselmo and bassist Rex Brown, were embarking on an official reunion tour featuring Zakk Wylde on guitar and Charlie Benante on the drums.
Since then the band has announced a number of South American festival dates and a few one-off shows slated for the end of this year. While the band has yet to announce any North American dates, it appears that their first headline performance scheduled for Santiago, Chile has already sold out. Due to the show’s high demand, Pantera has also decided to upgrade to an even larger venue that seats over 17,000, tripling the size of the previously booked venue which seated 5,400.
Pantera’s official social media posted the following announcement regarding the venue change. “Our upcoming headline show at Caupolican Theater, Santiago sold out so quickly that we decided to move the show to Movistar Arena on 12/12. And Sepultura is now on the bill as well.
Tickets available now. ” While of course it’s no surprise to see the first of many Pantera shows sell out, it’s also interesting as to why the band was booked at a 5,400 cap venue to begin with. It seemed obvious from the start that the reunion shows were meant for arena sized venues, and given the legendary status of the band that’s no challenging feat.
However, maybe there’s more to it than simply the band’s status. After all, many fans are engaging in discourse over how this ‘reunion’ is being marketed and promoted in the first place. Is it fair to call this band ‘Pantera,’ much less a ‘reunion’ if the original band’s two most important members are no longer alive? That of course is referring to the iconic Abbot brothers, guitarist Dimebag Darrell and drummer Vinnie Paul.
And despite the current lineup receiving the blessings of both Dime and Vinnie’s Estates, fans and fellow musicians have still argued as to whether or not it’s not fair to call this ‘Pantera. ’ MORE FOR YOU Why The Rock’s Social Media Muscle Made Him Hollywood’s Highest-Paid Actor Mindset Matters: How Disability Is Propelling Innovation Around The Future Of Work Despite Inflationary Pricing Customers Continue To Spend, Amazon Sales Up 15% This ultimately brings back into question of how this tour is being marketed and promoted. Regardless of these shows being promoted as ‘Pantera’ and not under some other moniker or tribute name, the band’s booking team might still be taking some precaution when booking these shows to see where the demand actually is given the underlying circumstance with this ‘reunion.
’ All of which might explain why the band’s headline shows are initially being booked at smaller size venues, and then being upgraded to a more fitting arena size capacity. It’ll certainly be interesting to see what venue sizes and what bands Pantera books when they announce their inevitable North American tour. Follow me on LinkedIn .
