Share to Facebook Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Wrong! There is A LOT going on at the moment in New York, including this must-see exhibit, Taylor .
. . [+] Swift: Storyteller, at the Museum of Arts and Design.
Lois Alter Mark New York is coming into its peak tourist season, with millions of people expected to descend on the city between Memorial Day and Labor Day. If you’re one of them, you’ll definitely want to see one of the Tony-nominated Broadway shows and celebrate the 10 th anniversary of the Cronut at Dominique Ansel Bakery. But you should also consider experiencing some of the city’s more under the radar exhibits and activities, as well.
Here are a variety of ways to get your New York fix. Taylor Swift: Storyteller at Museum of Arts and Design Taylor Swift: Storyteller at Museum of Arts and Design Lois Alter Mark Even if you don’t get to see Taylor Swift in concert at MetLife Stadium this weekend, you can see her amazing costumes at this timely and fascinating exhibit. Because Swift’s fashions are so tied to her videos and live performances, each piece is a statement in itself – and instantly recognizable to fans, who will immediately know that the red wedding dress is from the Blake Lively-directed video of I Bet You Think About Me (Taylor’s Version) (From The Vault) and that the cheerleader and ballerina ensembles were worn in the award-winning music video for Shake It Off .
This exhibit makes it clear that the clothes Swift wears are a reflection of her lyrics and are so relatable – which is why her fans have been dressing in outfits from their favorite album era at every concert. They can see many of those here, including the popular “Not A Lot Going On At The Moment” t-shirt from her 22 music video. You can watch many of those videos as they play in the background and read her handwritten lyrics on the wall.
This exhibit is a dream come true for Swifties – and if you’re not one yet, it’s likely to turn you into one. Jessica Chastain is simply riveting as Nora, the disillusioned housewife, and the unexpected staging is brilliantly minimalist, leaving it all up to the stellar cast, who more than rise to the challenge. The play, which was highly controversial when it was first released in 1879, feels as relevant today as it did back then although the most shocking part of this version is actually the ending, which just may be the best ending of a Broadway play ever. I don’t want to say a lot about this other than go see it.
Get Your Guide Private Marvelous Mrs. Maisel Site Tours Our guide reenacts the infamous “We got the rabbi!” scene on the Get Your Guide Private Marvelous . .
. [+] Mrs. Maisel Site Tour.
Lois Alter Mark After five seasons, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel just ended its award-winning run on Amazon Prime Video, and if you’re already missing Midge, Susie and the gang, this tour is for you. Not only will you get to see familiar sites like the music store where Susie introduced Midge to comedy albums and the butcher where Midge gleefully announced, “We got the rabbi!” in the series’ opening episode but you’ll see them all with a guide who has actually worked on the show and will share lots of insider stories and behind the scenes secrets.
There were about 15 fans on our tour and our appropriately dressed and coiffed guide, Catherine – who played a TWA flight attendant in season 5, episode 1 – entertained us with fun facts about the show as we drove along the city streets in a comfortable van, getting out to visit some of the show’s most notable settings. She expressed how accurate every detail about the show was, from the pre-1965 clothing – down to the underwear! – to the B. Altman’s make-up counter, where the packaging from Revlon and other huge names was replicated exactly for the time period.
She also explained that the average script was 10-15 pages longer than a typical comedy because everyone talked so fast. Like all Get Your Guide offerings, the Marvelous Mrs. Maisel tour provides unparalleled access and insight.
It will transport you back to the 1950s and give you a whole new look at New York. Yayoi Kusama I Spend Each Day Embracing Flowers at David Zwirner Yayoi Kusama I Spend Each Day Embracing Flowers at David Zwirner. Lois Alter Mark Pass by the Louis Vuitton windows on Fifth Avenue and 57 th Street to get a glimpse of the surprising partnership between the luxury brand and legendary artist, Yayoi Kusama – the queen of polka dots and pumpkins.
Then head downtown to David Zwirner, where the largest-ever exhibition of Kusama’s stunning work is on display. You’ll know you’re approaching the galleries when you see the massive line of people waiting to go into Kusama’s newest Infinity Mirror Room to take photos and immerse themselves in the endless beauty. You’ll also want to spend time in the three other rooms, where you can experience her massive flower and pumpkin sculptures up close and feel their power and vibrancy.
There are 36 paintings on view, as well, and their rich colors and patterns just pop from the walls. It is impossible to leave this exhibition without a smile on your face – which is why you may want to pick up a copy of Rizzoli’s Kusama book on the way out to learn more about the 94 year old icon whose art actually comes from a place of healing. Then treat yourself to a journal to explore your own feelings about the work.
Museum of Broadway A celebration of “Hello, Dolly!” at Museum of Broadway. Darren Cox It’s shocking that it took so long for a museum dedicated to Broadway to open in New York – the museum just opened last November – but the well thought out and lovingly curated result was worth the wait. A theater lover’s dream, the immersive and interactive museum is filled with costumes, props and Playbills as well as rare photos and videos.
There are spots for selfies so you can plant yourself in Oklahoma’s corn that’s as high as an elephant’s eye or transform yourself into an Instagrammable Simba or Nala. There are also sections of the museum dedicated to some of the most iconic shows of all time, including West Side Story and Phantom . You’ll learn lots of history – did you know the theater district was originally in FiDi? – and get to go behind the scenes to see how technicians work their magic.
The built-to-scale replica of the Gershwin Theatre gives you a look at how Wicked defies gravity and, as part of a special exhibit, you can even “Hirschfeld yourself” in honor of the legendary cartoonist. Small is Beautiful Miniature Art Small is Beautiful Miniature Art Small is Beautiful Miniature Art Proving it’s the little things that matter, this unique exhibition is a celebration of miniature art –and it’s a huge joy. More than 130 tiny pieces from 32 international artists are on display and they’re jaw dropping in their creativity and painstaking attention to detail.
Check out the itsy bitsy scenes from iconic movies and the way everyday objects are used to create totally different worlds. Magnifying glasses are available to explore the work and you can even go on a scavenger hunt to find some hidden gems. Hint: that ashtray is holding more than cigarette butts.
The exhibition is a triumph of imagination and a great way to get a new perspective on life. THE RIDE The Ride Darren Cox Taking advantage of the fact that the streets of New York are as entertaining as any show, this mobile theatrical venue – the only one of its kind – has been a beloved midtown fixture for more than a decade, taking more than a million guests on THE RIDE of their lives. For 75 minutes, riders are driven around the city, with two hosts providing commentary, fun facts and maybe even a song or two.
The bus itself offers stadium-style seating overlooking full length glass windows that provide unobstructed views of the street scene outside. Half the fun is guessing which passersby are part of the show and which ones are just New Yorkers doing their thing. The state of the art technology is impressive but it’s the humanity that makes this a must-do.
