You might need to be 17 to get your licence in the UK, but we reckon the driving experience can start much earlier. Ride on cars mean kids can get the all important driving practice in much earlier – even if their whip only goes 3mph. And if you’ve got a healthy budget, your little ones could be cruising around in a very luxurious motor indeed.

From modern mini Teslas to pint-sized classic cars, these are some of the coolest out there. The kid-sized version of Tesla’s popular Model S may not cost anywhere near as much as its adult-sized counterpart but this scaled-down electric version looks almost identical to the real thing. You can expect very cool features such as foldable side mirrors, a ‘frunk’ for storing toys , alongside an AUX input to play your favourite tunes.

With ‘front’ and ‘back’ buttons that make it super easy to drive, mini-motorists can toggle between three-six mph. Perfect for kids who want to cruise around their sizeable back garden, or parents who like the idea of their kids bragging about the planet-friendly efficiency of their vehicle. Available from £510 from Radio Flyer.

Another one aimed at wealthy enthusiasts, the Bugatti Baby II is a contemporary tribute to Ettore Bugatti’s original 1926 masterpiece. The French manufacturer has assembled just 500 of these vintage-inspired electric mini models at three-quarters the size, and just like the real supercar it mimics, there are plenty of customisations that’ll have mini motorists positively drooling over this bespoke motor. Best of all, every Baby II owner receives automatic membership to The Little Car Club, which allows owners – whether children or adults – to drive their small cars on renowned tracks around the world in special events.

Available from £27,300 from Bugatti Baby. This battery-powered Bentley is actually based on the marque’s concept car, complete with the head-turning looks of its adult counterpart, but for a fraction of the price. Little hands and feet can take control of the steering wheel and foot pedal, and feel every bit the high-class driver.

There’s a working horn, headlights, wing mirrors, gear stick and realistic-looking alloy wheels. If the kids aren’t quite big enough, parents can override the controls using a remote to steer the car. A battery that’ll keep going for 90 minutes and a unique speaker system that mimics realistic engine sound effects complete this sweet ride.

Available from £144. 99 from Electric Ride On Cars. This mini electric Aston Martin by the Little Car Company was designed using 3D scans of an original DB5 and is definitley not fit for nippers.

It has been built to two thirds the size of 007’s ride, complete with rear-wheel-drive, a fully electric powertrain and selection of driving modes. Licensed by the car manufacturers themselves, then tested and signed off by the factories’ own test drivers, this is a serious ride. Owners of the original car can request matching chassis numbers and colour/leather specifications; and just like the original, only 1,059 of the models will be made.

Available from £35,000 from The Little Car Company. This article contains affiliate links. We will earn a small commission on purchases made through one of these links but this never influences our experts’ opinions.
