NurPhoto via Getty Images Good grief, I’m so sick. Sick and tired. Just absolutely wiped out, falling asleep at the keyboard and all that jazz.

So please do bear with me. I don’t think I have much in the way of a clever preamble so we can just skip ahead and get to the good stuff. But before we do that, happy October! It’s almost Halloween time! Okay, let’s do this Wordle! How To Solve Today’s Word The Hint: Green.

The Clue: This word has a double letter. . .

A bit of whiplash today. My opening guess left me with a whopping 255 remaining options (I picked sugar because of the new Wes Anderson / Roald Dahl short on Netflix ). I went with worth because I wanted something that would move the ‘R’ and lo and behold, it came up green! I could think of just two words at this point, though later Wordle Bot said I had three to choose from.

I thought of merit and beret and went with my instinct. Not a good choice! Oh well, at least I guessed beret on guess #4. Today’s Score I get 0 points for guessing in four and -1 for losing to tricksy Bot.

-1 all told. Oh well! Today’s Wordle Etymology The word “beret” has a somewhat complex etymology. It ultimately derives from the French word “béret,” which came into the language in the 17th century.

The exact origin of the word “béret” in French is not entirely clear, but it is believed to have been influenced by various regional dialects and languages. One theory is that “béret” may have roots in the Occitan language, which is spoken in southern France and parts of Spain. In Occitan, the word “berret” or “béret” referred to a type of flat, round hat.

It’s possible that the French adopted this word and its associated headwear. Another theory suggests that “béret” may have connections to the Gascon language, which is a Romance language spoken in southwestern France. In Gascon, the word “berret” also referred to a type of head covering.

The beret, as we know it today, is a soft, round, flat-crowned hat made of wool or other materials and is often associated with French culture and style. It has been worn by various groups and military units throughout history, contributing to its popularity and recognition around the world. Can you solve today’s phrase?
