It looks like a controller, but it’s 100% chocolate. Have you ever wanted to eat an Xbox controller? Well, maybe not. However, Xbox is giving you the chance to live this idea out.
After two iconic turns of the whimsical chocolatier by Gene Wilder and Johnny Depp, Timothée Chalamet now brings the character back to the big screen in the upcoming prequel film . And, in sync with the film’s wondrous world of colorful imagination and spectacle, Xbox is trying their hand at some sugary goods too. In partnership with the film, Xbox has concocted some Willy Wonka-themed “(X)boxes of Chocolates” packed with enough design and flavor to make Wonka himself proud.
And, for a limited time, fans have a chance to win their own. So what chocolate factory surprises are in the box? Firstly, the box includes a real, burgundy Xbox controller to match the titular character’s iconic coat. The smooth, matte finish makes for a premium and elevated feel that sits in line with the level of quality one expects from the Wonka name.
But of course most impressive in the box is what you can actually eat. The box comes with a set of multi-flavored chocolate truffles inspired by the controller’s buttons. But then the box also includes, the crown of the package, the first ever official edible Xbox controller.
The controller is made of 100% pure chocolate and comes delicately wrapped in golden paper evoking the tickets Willy Wonka famously hides with his chocolate bars much later in his life. This is the first official edible chocolate Xbox controller. To be clear, the chocolate controller is not actually functional.
But you’d be forgiven for thinking that it was as its shape, feel, and design are nearly identical to a real, modern Xbox controller. All buttons and joysticks are accounted for, and even the faint Xbox logo on the power button is visible in the light. The primary difference, when held, is how much heavier this is than an actual controller.
And, as I got access to a review package of the box of chocolates, I can confirm that the chocolate replica is in fact delicious. But how can you get your hands on this set? Xbox has launched a special sweepstakes tied to the upcoming film where fans can enter for a chance to win a variety of uniquely designed Wonka-themed Xbox prizes, including the chocolate set above. Fans can enter for their chance to win some of these prizes by first following (the platform formerly known as Twitter), and then announcing the sweepstakes.
The giveaway ends on December 14th. Xbox has unveiled a specially designed console in celebration of the ‘Wonka’ movie. The box of chocolates isn’t the biggest prize up for grabs though.
Fans will also have the chance to win a special Wonka-themed Xbox Series X console designed to look like a chocolate bar. The Xbox is also paired with a decorative display modeled after Willy Wonka’s imaginative storefront (be aware though that while the console looks like a chocolate bar it is, unlike the chocolate controller, not edible). If you want to experience some of the Wonka magic right away though, there’s no need to wait for the results of the sweepstakes.
Instead, you can visit Microsoft Experience Centers in New York, London, and Sydney to interact with specially designed in-store experiences celebrating the film. Each store now features a special puzzle box designed after Willy Wonka’s suitcase where fans can try their hands at solving things for the chance to win even more Xbox prizes. In-store ‘Wonka’ activations await fans in Microsoft Experience Centers across three cities.
It’s hard to describe exactly why the character of Willy Wonka has had such a powerful staying power in our imaginations. But the Wonka name is of course about more than just the chocolate or even the factory. Across the books, and now several takes on film, it seems what’s been so magical about this character is his ability to encourage a full embrace of the imagination.
So Xbox, in line with the mythical man, is encouraging fans to live up to that imagination as well. Wonka , . .
