Riina Haapala was reduced to tears when she woke up on Thursday morning to find her newly purchased Peugeot waterlogged and half buried in the road on Short Street in Southport. Riina Haapala was left shattered after she found her car swallowed up by a sinkhole on a street on the Gold Coast after she wen to visit her partner at an apartment nearby on Short Street the night before the shocking incident The 21-year-old woman has now received a helping hand from Gold Coast City Council, who said they will replace her car.

‘The City is actively working with the customer to determine the appropriate level of compensation,’ a spokesperson said. The massive sink hole that opened up Short Street was blamed on a broken water main which burst open, causing the sinkhole ‘Reviewing the matter, council will help the student to purchase a car of similar value,’ they said. The student from Finland said she was left gobsmacked after being confronted by the scene in the early hours of Thursday morning.

‘At first I couldn’t really believe what happened but after about five minutes I just started crying,’ she told 7 News . Ms Haapala had parked her two-door Peugeot on the street before she visited her partner’s apartment the night before. The sink hole opened at 4am on Thursday after a broken water main underneath the street, burst open the night before.

The ruptured water main flooded the street with water before it chipped away at the clay and asphalt underneath, which caused the sinkhole open up. Ms Haapala’ s two-door Peugeot was towed by council workers after emergency crews arrived at the scene late on Thursday morning to remove the car and begin repairing the damaged street By time Ms. Haapala got to the car at 4.

30am to drive to the gym, the car had nose-dived into the hole. ‘I’m just hoping I can claim something back from the council,’ she said. Emergency crews towed the car out of the area after 10am on Thursday morning.

Gold Coast City Council told Daily Mail Australia the area was repaired by council workers a few of days later.
