Lukas Lerager gave Copenhagen the lead early in the second half (56’). First, the good news. That result has extended Bayern Munich’s unbeaten run in the Champions League group stage to 36 games.

The German record champions have also won the last 16 games in a row and are now the first team in Champions League history to go unbeaten in 18 group stage away games in a row. On top of that, Thomas Müller has now equaled former Real Madrid goalkeeper Iker Casillas with 101 Champions League wins. Only former Man United, Real Madrid, and Juventus star Cristiano Ronaldo (115) have more, and with the Portuguese star now playing in Saudi Arabia it is only a question of time until Müller will also secure that record.

There is more positive news. Bayern Munich’s biggest rivals in the group, Manchester United, lost their game against Galatasaray at home at Old Trafford 3-2. That puts Bayern in the incredible position of making a big step to the next round with a win over Galatasaray on matchday 3.

Now, to the not-so-good news. Although Bayern Munich beat Copenhagen, the result will undoubtedly raise further question marks surrounding head coach Thomas Tuchel’s side. Bayern labored through the first 45 minutes, and a better team would have perhaps punished that spell—much like Leverkusen and Leipzig have done earlier this season.

But while Tuchel’s changes were excellent, it is also telling that both goals were the products of individual brilliance. Whether it was Musiala’s dribble and fantastic finish for the equalizer or Müller’s power dribble and set up for the winner, both goals were not necessarily the result of a tactical system.
