Key Facts A close friend reached out to Tyndall Wednesday but never received a response, provoking the friend to visit his home where she found him unresponsive in bed, Tyndall’s attorney, Leonard Levine, told the Times .

Levine expects to present a death certificate at the next hearing in the pending case against Tyndall, which was scheduled to take place next year. Tyndall, 76, pleaded not guilty in August to 27 felonies, 18 counts of sexual penetration of an unconscious person and nine counts of sexual battery—all of which could have resulted in 64 years in prison if Tyndall was convicted. Prosecutors have said the alleged crimes took place between 2009 and 2016 at a student health clinic where Tyndall was employed as a gynecologist for 30 years, further alleging his victims were as young as 18 years old.

USC declined to comment. Big Number $1. 1 billion .

That’s how much USC paid out to former patients of Tyndall as part of a massive settlement in 2021. Three years prior, the university also agreed to a separate class-action settlement worth $215 million. Key Background Tyndall was placed on leave in 2016 after he was reported for poor hygiene practices.

A nurse reported she never saw Tyndall wash his hands before or after appointments and that he requested to keep used intrauterine devices, according to the Daily Trojan , the university’s student newspaper. A bug infestation required cleaning while he was on vacation, leading to the discovery of a locked file cabinet containing patient photos. The university found Tyndall violated office maintenance and patient health information policies.

A Times investigation into Tyndall’s alleged sexual misconduct published before his medical license was temporarily suspended in 2018. It was permanently revoked in 2019, not long after he was arrested and initially charged with 29 total counts of sexual penetration and sexual battery by fraud. Tangent USC, which saw its former president Max Nikias step down amid the scandal, repeatedly denied allegations it attempted to cover up reports about Tyndall’s behavior, the Los Angeles Daily News reported.

The university received scrutiny after it forced Tyndall to step down and did not report accusations against him to the California Medical Board, according to the New York Times . An internal investigation from USC said its findings were a personnel matter that required no obligation to inform the board.
