Marshals Service and a search helicopter in Oxon Hill, Maryland—a suburb located about 11 miles south of where he escaped custody. Haynes was transported to D. C.

Metro Police’s homicide branch where he will be charged with the escape and the August 2023 murder of Brent Hayward, according to a statement . No one was injured in the capture, according to the Washington Post . The police department, which offered a $30,000 reward for information leading to Haynes’ arrest, thanked members of the community for providing information on Haynes’ whereabouts.

What We Don’t Know Police and marshals didn’t disclose if anyone will be charged with harboring Haynes, nor where Haynes had been and how he survived while on the run, the Post reported. Key Background In September, Haynes was arrested and was going to be processed in connection to the murder he’s now been charged with. Haynes complained about a pre-existing ankle injury after his arrest and was transported to George Washington University Hospital as a result.

The 30-year-old escaped from custody while a police officer changed his handcuffs at the hospital, leading to a large manhunt in the immediate area that triggered a shelter-in-place order at GWU. D. C.

Metro Police said in a news conference it received “numerous reports of possible sightings” of Haynes and was dedicating resources to each tip. Surprising Fact The $30,000 reward for information leading to Haynes’ arrest was $5,000 more than law enforcement offered for information on Danelo Cavalcante—an “ extremely dangerous ” convicted murderer who escaped state prison in Pennsylvania and went on the run August 31, just days before Haynes did. Cavalcante hid from police for nearly two weeks before being arrested.

Tangent Haynes was initially suspected of shooting 33-year-old Brent Hayward in the head at a Northeast D. C. gas station in mid-August.

Haynes, who was charged for the murder Thursday, was arrested less than a month later. A friend of Hayward’s mother told CBS in September that the mother was scared to leave her home after learning of Haynes’ escape, as Haynes and his girlfriend lived in the same complex.
