Bringing the best of both worlds, strong hybrid cars are extremely fuel efficient along with offering ample performance. Let’s have a look at the upcoming hybrid cars in the Indian market.
1. New-Gen Renault Duster Expected to launch in the Indian market in the second half of 2025, the 3rd gen Renault Duster will get a strong hybrid engine option. Dubbed the Hybrid 140, it will use a 1.
6-litre four-cylinder petrol engine good enough for 94 bhp paired with 49 bhp rated two electric motors. This hybrid system uses an electric automatic gearbox and can run on all-electric mode up to 80% of the time in city usage, making it extremely fuel efficient. The Duster will be based on the new CMF-B platform and it will sport a completely new design as well as features.
2. New-Gen Toyota Fortuner As per the reports, Toyota will debut the Fortuner Hybrid next year internationally and it will use the familiar 2. 8-litre turbo diesel engine mated to a 48V mild hybrid system.
While some reports also suggest that the next-gen Fortuner will get a proper strong hybrid powertrain, there is no confirmation from the company’s end. We expect a strong hybrid option to be a part of the package in the new generation model, however, its exact launch timeline for India is still unknown. 3.
New-Gen Maruti Suzuki Swift and Dzire New Swift Recently, the new-gen Swift was launched in Japan and it is scheduled for a launch in India next year i. e. 2024.
The hatchback will be followed by the debut of its sedan sibling Dzire. Both the cars will likely use the same set of powertrain options comprising of a Z12E 1. 2 litre 3-cylinder petrol engine putting out 82 bhp and 108 Nm of peak torque.
This engine will also be available with a mild-hybrid system which will bump up the figures by 3. 1 bhp and 60 Nm torque. We expect both engine options for the India-spec variant.
4. Maruti Suzuki 7-seater SUV Rendering Source: SRK Designs The 7-seater SUV from Maruti Suzuki will be based on the Grand Viatra and it is expected to launch by the end of 2024. Codenamed Y17, the SUV will utilize the existing Global C platform, however, the wheelbase will be longer than the Grand Vitara.
The powertrain will be a straight lift-off and the 1. 5 litre 3 cylinder strong hybrid petrol engine is bound to be a part of the package. The upcoming Maruti 7-seater SUV will rival the likes of Tata Safari, MG Hector Plus, Hyundai Alcazar and Mahindra XUV700 amongst others in the Indian market.
5. Nissan X-Trail The latest 4th generation model of the Nissan X-trail was unveiled last year in October and it is expected to debut sometime next year in the domestic market. The full-size SUV will be sold in India via the CBU route and recently, the facelift of the X-Trail was also introduced internationally.
While the SUV is available in multiple powertrain options internationally, we expect the 1. 5-litre petrol engine with full-hybrid tech to be sold in the Indian market. 6.
Toyota Corolla Cross-Based 7-Seater SUV Render Source: Design AG A new 7-seater SUV for the Indian market is in the works and it will be based on the Toyota Corolla Cross sold in overseas markets. The new three-row SUV will get the option of a 2. 0-litre strong-hybrid petrol engine putting out 184 bhp, the same unit we get in the Innova Hycross.
The SUV will be based on modular TNGA-C architecture and will take on the likes of the Hyundai Tucson and Jeep Meridian in India. 7. Volkswagen Tayron Expected to launch by early 2025, the Volkswagen Tayron will be sold in India via the CKD route.
The SUV will share its underpinnings with the next-gen Tiguan, which is the upgraded version of the brand’s MQB platform. Reports suggest that it will be offered in both 5 and 7-seater configurations. In terms of powertrain, the Tayron will get the option of a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) setup along with the turbo petrol and diesel engines.
