Got it! Jul 2, 2022, 09:43am EDT | Share to Facebook Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Destiny 2 Bungie We have gotten bits and pieces of hints about Bungie’s upcoming non-Destiny 2 projects over the past few years, but now a few things are starting to coalesce, it seems. While we believe Bungie is working on a new IP for some sort of wide-spanning PvP-focused game, it seems they may still be drawing on the Destiny IP for something else, a mobile game. This comes from The Game Post , which scours job listings and LinkedIn pages weekly for new clues.

It appears that the longrunning joint project between Bungie and Chinese mobile developer NetEase is going to be a Destiny FPS on mobile. The LinkedIn profile in question from a NetEase artist says they are working with Bungie on “an unannounced FPS mobile game. ” The Game Post also cites their own sources that this is, perhaps unsurprisingly, a Destiny game that has been in development for two years already.

It is also not a mobile version of Destiny 2, despite being in the Destiny universe. No clue on if it could have some tie-in to the main game, but it appears to be its own thing. Bungie is also reportedly working on its own mobile engine.

Of course, any talk of a beloved franchise moving to mobile is cause for concern in this age of Diablo Immortal and similar projects, as when you make a mobile game, you likely are going to monetize it like a mobile game, which means some combination of paying to skip wait timers, gambling loot boxes and paying for power. No telling what exactly a no doubt F2P Destiny shooter on mobile will look like, but it is almost impossible to imagine it escapes controversy from the game’s current collection of fans.

If it’s true that this game has been in development for a while, it may be almost time to reveal it. There are a hundred different possibilities of what this could end up being like, and I’m sure the goal is to expand the Destiny IP broadly, and not only attract mobile players (and their money) but bring new players to the main franchise as well, which will continue on even as all these other projects come to fruition. But the road ahead is fraught with risks, balancing the way most mobile games make money and the kind of experience players expect from Destiny.

You may think Diablo Immortal may provide a roadmap of what not to do, and yet that game is currently making loads of money so…you see the issue. Again, nothing here is confirmed yet, but the overall idea that some kind of Destiny FPS mobile game is coming seems pretty cemented at this point, and hopefully some reveals are coming soon. Bungie Day is next week, after all.
