Kleefisch has broad support from Republican officials across the country, while Trump is essentially on his own in backing Michels, who nonetheless holds a slim lead over the lieutenant governor in limited polling done on the race. In the Arizona GOP gubernatorial primary, Pence endorsed Karrin Taylor Robson, while Trump endorsed Kari Lake, in what looks to be a highly competitive primary where both candidates have strong support from leading Republican figures. Pence’s candidate beat Trump’s in the one battle already decided: the Georgia GOP gubernatorial primary, where Pence-backed Gov.

Brian Kemp walloped Trump-backed former Sen. David Perdue by more than 50 percentage points . Trump and Pence have both endorsed the same candidate in at least three races, backing former White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders (R) in the Arkansas gubernatorial election and supporting the reelection of U.

S. Reps. Randy Feenstra (R-Iowa) and Ashley Hinson (R-Iowa).

What To Watch For The Arizona primary is Tuesday, while Wisconsin’s primary is August 9. Key Background Trump’s entry into the 2024 presidential race appears to be a formality at this point, with the looming question being whether he announces before or after the November midterm elections. Pence has also strongly signaled that he intends to run after giving a series of recent high-profile speeches at conservative events, as he reportedly plans a trip for Iowa next month, the site of the first GOP presidential contest.

Both Pence and Trump have sharply criticized President Joe Biden and Democrats in Congress, leaving the January 6 attack on the Capitol and the dramatic falling out between the two over the riot as the potential focal point of a 2024 contest. Polling suggests Pence faces a tough task of attracting primary voters in a party where many remain loyal to Trump, though there are signs the former president’s grasp on the GOP may be waning . The latest RealClearPolitics polling average, however, shows Trump with around 53% support in a 2024 primary, while Pence lags far behind with 7%.

Tangent Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie and Sen.

Tom Cotton (Ark. ) are also among the Republicans that have signaled a potential 2024 presidential run. Further Reading Jan.
