Bandai Spirits One of the most anticipated Metal Build toy releases of the year occurred yesterday morning in Japan and was that of the Metal Build Hi-Nu Gundam . While the toy itself is genuinely marvellous, it does have one annoying issue.

The Hi-Nu Gundam is originally from the novel of Beltorchika’s Children , which is an alternate telling of the movie Gundam: Char’s Counterattack also written by Yoshiyuki Tomino . While the Nu Gundam in Char’s Counterattack is somewhat unfinished, the Hi-Nu Gundam is the fully completed version of the mobile suit. Back when the Hi-Nu Gundam was first revealed in the pages of its host novel, the only real physical representations of the design were very expensive, rare and fragile garage kits.

Over the years, the popularity of the design has since warranted a variety of toys, with this Metal Build version being the latest. Like other Metal Build releases, the Hi-Nu Gundam is filled to the brim with diecast, from the joints covering its extensive articulation to other parts to help with the balance. The detailing is also pristine throughout, with fine decals and a nuanced paint scheme.

All told, this is a great Gundam toy, if it weren’t for one maddening problem. One of the iconic aspects to the Hi-Nu Gundam are its fin funnels arranged at the back in a “wing” type configuration.

On previous toy releases, the fin funnels connected very easily to the binders at the rear. However, on this Metal Build toy, that is not the case. The connectors for the fin funnels and the binders are incredibly tough and you have to be very careful in how they are attached so you don’t break anything.

It took me a good few hours to attach all six fin funnels and I was genuinely worried that something might break with all the force I had to apply to get them to “pop” into place. It’s such a strange oversight for Bandai Spirits to have made, especially on a toy that is very much a fan favorite and in high demand. Obviously, it is still an amazing toy and if you are a fan of the design you should pick one up, but the fin funnel setup is both annoying and a bit scary.
