Share to Facebook Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Fortnite Epic Fortnite’s train of collaborations never ends, but it may be about to finally add another giant staple of pop culture to its lineup. But one that raises a whole lot of questions. Fans have spotted (via ShiinaBR ) that there is a little mini diorama of Helms Deep set up on the map in this current season of Fortnite.
It’s not a true zone, just a little sandcastle, some rocks and some garbage, but it’s very clearly meant to be Helms Deep. The timing of this, of course, is no coincidence, as Amazon’s billion dollar Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power TV series is about to air in two weeks on September 2, so it seems likely this would no doubt be a crossover meant to promote the series that they have so much riding on. But I have a lot of questions here.
The Rings of Power takes places far, far earlier than The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit, and it barely contains any crossover characters other than a few elves and Sauron himself. So if Fortnite is doing a crossover, would this be for Rings of Power characters, or would they be doing the better known, better loved characters from the main series. I could see a Sauron skin in either case, but I have to believe that Gandalf, Aragorn and Legolas skins would sell better than (insert Rings of Power characters I don’t know).
I am not sure how you would do dwarves or Hobbits without having to give them Oddjob-size hitboxes. Embracer Group somehow just bought a bunch of rights to Lord of the Rings properties in a really weird deal that seems separate from Amazon’s deal to have the TV LOTR rights.
The long and short of it is that Embracer seems like they now have the video game rights to Lord of the Rings, and given that Fortnite is…a video game, how does that work, even if the skins are meant to be linked to either the old movies or the new TV show? Few things are more complicated than the Tolkien estate and the various rights attached to it, so I’m just wondering exactly how that all works. Lord of the Rings joining Fortnite in whatever form would be another huge feather in the game’s cap for its vast collection of IPs. We just had this epic Dragon Ball Z crossover, and it seems like there are fewer and fewer universe that have not been sucked into Fortnite at this point.
I previously would have said Harry Potter was a big one that it was missing, though the luster of that universe has faded quite a bit. No Game of Thrones skins yet, nothing promoting House of the Dragon this Sunday. But Lord of the Rings seems like it’s absolutely on its way some time soon, and I’d expect it in the next two weeks before the show premieres.
But which skins? From what era? That remains to be seen. Follow me on Twitter , YouTube , Facebook and Instagram . Subscribe to my free weekly content round-up newsletter, God Rolls .
