Share to Facebook Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Sue Storm Marvel While we are probably too early to start casting actual X-Men in the MCU, as we move toward that phase of the universe, free from the FOX era, everyone was expecting that after months of rumors about the Fantastic Four, we’d finally have some answers at D23 today. That…did not pan out as expected. Despite loads of whispering that D23 would be the moment that we would get the cast for Fantastic Four announced and likely presented on stage, Kevin Feige specifically said that no casting news was coming at the show, confirming only that Matt Shakman was officially directing, as previously rumored, and that the film will be out November 8, 2024.
Shakman was the man responsible for directing all nine episodes of WandaVision, so Disney must have been pretty happy with how he did there, so they plucked him for this role. Hard to argue with that, as I’d say WandaVision remains one of the biggest successes of the Disney Plus show era. As for the cast, none of the predictions panned out, which contained insider reports that actors like Penn Badgley and Jodie Comer had been picked as Reed Richards and Sue Storm respectively, and were set to be announced at D23.
Others were convinced by other rumors that Henry Cavill was going to be joining the MCU as Doctor Doom, a far cry from his role as Superman at DC. So if that was wrong, who’s to say the casting itself isn’t also wrong? While Disney fans were never promised a reveal of the cast at D23, they already didn’t get anything at SDCC, so they figured this was the time, as the movie will no doubt have to start shooting somewhat soon.
I do wonder if there may be some sort of controversy in trying to find all five core members of the cast, if they are waiting this long to reveal them. It’s possible some actors are locked in while others are not yet. It’s not like there was no Marvel news.
We got new trailers for Secret Invasion, and info about Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, Ant-Man Quantumania, Ironheart, Echo, Armor Wars, Daredevil: Born Again, Captain America: New World Order and Loki season 2. But Fantastic Four is probably the project everyone is the most curious about, given that it’s such big-name new heroes headed to the MCU at last, while all those other projects are either more minor characters, or a lot of returning folks we already know. If it wasn’t announced today, I have no idea what the next event might be where casting is discussed.
Would they wait another nine months until next year’s SDCC? That seems unlikely, but who knows. So, the speculation continues, and expect a whole new round of “leaks” and insider reports about why nothing happened today, and who is still in the running.
