Bandai Namco It seems that the kids are enjoying Gundam Evolution on PC a fair bit, but as with all new multiplayer games there are already cries that the game is unbalanced. The reality is that it’s far too early to tell and that the game has a lot more to offer than at first appears.

I totally get all the Overwatch comparisons with Gundam Evolution , but unlike Overwatch this game has a very different set of abilities for its varied set of mobile suits. As the Gundam mythos has a vast array of mobile suits contained within it, many of those mecha are specialized for close combat with the Gundam Barbatos being noteworthy in this instance. For most shooter players, having a very fast mecha zoom up in your face with a giant mace is understandably going to be pretty unsettling.

In the early Gundam Extreme Versus games, players outside of Japan complained about the God Gundam for the very same reason. That they thought the game was based around ranged combat and that there were no counters for melee specialised opponents. It took some time, but players figured out where to hit the God Gundam where it hurt.

Likewise, people are figuring out how to handle mobile suits like the Barbatos and Exia in Gundam Evolution . This is also because the game is very much team based and the composition of mobile suits in your team is critical at handling enemy mobile suits. Again, there are workarounds to this (stun attacks are your friend) and you need to think more tactically about how you tackle certain mobile suits working together. If you want to be a lone gunman that owns everyone with your glittering skills, then you will likely die very horribly and very quickly. Gundam Evolution is about team work and understanding the mobile suit composition of each team.

While Gundam Evolution is not what I would call a Gundam game, or even a mecha game for that matter, it does still borrow elements from its various host anime works and that is what is helping it find its place with newer players. My only advice, is that you need to spend more time with the game before highlighting balancing issues. Obviously, there will be balancing changes made in the future and I am sure the development team is watching this very closely, but for now just give the game some time and try not to let your soul be weighed down by gravity.
