With the Plug 2. 0 One X, Gigaset’s smart power outlet enters the next round, but it does not directly replace its predecessor, but rather complements the Bocholt-based company’s portfolio. The big difference between the two is that the new model can also record the power consumption of connected devices.
In addition, switching via Amazon Alexa and Google Home is supported. To put the socket into operation, a Gigaset Smart Home Base is mandatory. This manages all smart home products, connects them to each other and allows their configuration.
We already described the setup of the base in our review of the Gigaset heating thermostats and can be read in more detail there. Since Gigaset uses a DECT-ULE connection between the devices and the base, the user might get the idea that it is compatible with products from other manufacturers. For example, the FritzBoxes, Telekom’s Magenta products or Becker, among others, also rely on DECT-ULE.
However, they are on a different protocol, so they are not compatible with each other. However, the smart door locks from Nuki can be easily integrated via the Elements app, and a link with Google Home or Home Connect Plus is also enabled directly by Gigaset. It is also possible to connect a Hue Bridge that is available in the network.
Gigaset does not provide any concrete information about the support of Apple’s Homekit or the Matter standard, and neither is possible at the time of testing. Setting up the Gigaset Plug 2. 0 One X is quick.
Simply plug it into a power outlet and start the Elements app ( Android / iOS ). In the Elements section, tap the plus sign in the top right corner and then tap “plug” in the Add menu. Then you just have to select the correct socket variant and follow the instructions.
In our test, this took less than five minutes and we were ready to go. Due to the thickness of the socket, it can get a bit cramped behind cabinets, but this also applies to competing products. The small connection button on the side of the plug can also be used to manually control the power supply.
Otherwise, the socket is controlled via the app and can also be integrated into routines or rules can be defined for automation. The Plug 2. 0 is designed for indoor use, since it does not have a designated splash water protection.
The Gigaset Plug 2. 0 ONE X can also measure the power consumption of the devices connected to it and log them in the app. This works very reliably and quite accurately in the test.
However, the deviations become visible with smaller amounts of power, which is also due to the fact that no decimal places are displayed. For example, the power socket determined a power consumption of 21 watts for a notebook in operation, while our multimeter measured 21. 9 watts.
The latter also includes the smart socket’s power consumption, which is 0. 34 watts when it is turned on and 0. 2 watts when it is turned off.
The recording works quite well and is suitable for determining the costs incurred, because a price per kilowatt hour can also be entered and the socket estimates the costs incurred from this. Unfortunately, the period is limited to the last 30 days and there is no way to export the recorded data apart from a screenshot. Likewise, it is possible to reverse the measurement function to determine the production of electricity rather than the consumption.
Gigaset’s Plug 2. 0 One X is a successful addition to its smart home range. It offers real added value with its ability to record power consumption and energy production, and its accuracy was convincing in the test.
The smart socket Gigaset Plug 2. 0 One X convinces in the test, but it is not exactly cheap. With the manual switching, the socket can also be operated when the smartphone is not at hand.
However, we would have wished for a broader platform support. Especially the lack of support for Apple’s Homekit should be mentioned here. The compatibility with Matter is also still missing.
The Gigaset Plug 2. 0 One X can be purchased directly from the manufacturer’s store (RRP: 50 Euros/~$54), but is also available from many popular retailers such as Amazon . Disclosure: The product tested here was provided to the author free of charge by the manufacturer.
