The energy price cap rose on January 1 from £1,834 a year, the lowest figure since March 2022, to £1,928 a year. This means that millions of households will now see their annual energy bill increase by £94. We explain more about the energy price cap and reveal seven moves you can make now to keep costs down.

If you are struggling with your household bills after the expense of Christmas you could be eligible for some extra support. Households on certain benefits are set to receive a £299 cost of living payment in just weeks. Brits who are eligible will get the money paid directly into their bank accounts between February 6 and February 22.

Meanwhile, we have a full list of household bills that are set to change in 2024 and reveal what you can do to avoid paying more. Other ways to save money on your energy bills If you can, British Gas recommends that you have your thermostat at between 18-21 degrees. Just making this small change could save you up to £100 a year on your bills, which in turn could cancel out the price cap rise.

Also, to get the most out of your heating when it is on make sure you remove any furniture that is blocking the radiators. If you are struggling for space and this is not possible, just be sure to leave a little gap. This will make it easier for the heat to circulate in the room and hopefully mean you won’t need your heating on for as long.

If you don’t use all the rooms in your house, you should also make sure that the radiators are turned off or down low as this will also help when it comes to keeping the costs down.
